Never seen the point of these. If you have a spare front der. lying around then you could just use that, as it will do the same thing. If you want good chain retention, then run a chainguide with at least a lower pulley to increase chain tension. I have used the Lopes SL which is pretty minimalistic, light, but excellent. This is a good option if you don't need a bash, which I assume you don't as the xcx won't work with bash either.

I agree a lower chain guide is probably optimal but I was avoiding it as I have not needed it. I was mostly looking to replace and avoid mrp as I am not a fan of the plastic they use in my 1.x and was equally not impressed with the plastic they use on the g2.

I will checkout the options from ethirteen including those using a lower pulley.

Same here. Although, I find there's a bit of chain rub in the two lowest gears on my 2010 Spot (with BB spacer installed on the non-drive side as well). Never had any issues when I had this set-up on my Burner though.

 

The ethirteen xcx-st... I don't see an adjustment for distance between seat tube and chainring -- only for up & down. Is there an adjustment for moving it inboard / outboard?

Love to have one of these on my new Sultan, but not sure if it'll do what I need it to. Thanks.

the instructions show some shims to adjust things in the lateral plane, but not sure if that would be enough. Suppose it would work unless you're running some completely whack chain-line or something.

I'm getting kinda itchy to get this beauty built. Other than my wheels, crank, stem & bars, everything's gonna be brand new. I haven't built a dream bike in 9 years. Thought the Salsa Big Mama I built 2 years ago would be that, and it was indeed a fine bicycle... I mainly didn't like the color.

IF you are using an "unapproved" lube for either the MRP or the e.thirteen, you will see premature plastic failure.

I had to change from my favorite Prolink to Triflow when I moved to a taco-bash setup on a new bike.

Sorry about that. I handle all the warranty claims for MRP and we don't see many plastic failures unless bolts have been over torqued or one of the lubes listed in the post below have been used.

In any case I'd recommend a guide with lower retention, 1x-style guides are aimed at hardtails and short travel bikes...

 

I think it's lubes with mineral oil in them which have issues with some plastics. My normal prolink gold destroyed a couple of different plastic bash guards.

 

Just an FYI Rohloff makes a seat tube mount upper chain guide. It includes spacers for precise chain alignment and fits several diameter seat tubes. Nice plastic and very simple well thought out peice. With that said I didn't run it long because I to prefer just running a lower pulley for trail riding

50-53mm Chainline adjustment via the included 3 cams...should have no issues with the majority of 50mm cranksets on the market. Simple and strong.

Unfortunately, many of the harsh solvents used in some chainlubes (for dissolving that dirt) will chemically attack the bonds in the plastics. There isn't one chemical compound that does it...there are quite a few. Over-torquing and impacts (micro-vibrations) speed up cracking as well. Our Approved Lubricant Summary is worth taking a look at.
