Hi All,

Box are looking to release a modern 9 speed groupset.

It's 11-50, but on 9 cogs.

Seems quite original I asked for a few details, however as they were not forthcoming a quick google indicates it's just normal chinese kit.

So I've seen this:

1x 9 Speed 11-50T Bolany

So anyone knows anything about how these are supposed to work?

Do you use a 9-speed chain..a 10 speed a 12?

What derailleur/shifter combo will shift it?

Any tips anyone?

Google fu has failed me.

Thanks.

I meant the non-box 9 speed stuff.

Box 9-speed derailleur has a ratio of ~1.1, so you can use a normal derailleur.

However, I can't find mention of cassette spacing or cable pull.

They said the cable pull was non-linear, I doubt it.

I was then looking into the non-box 9-speed stuff like the bolany.

Someone mentioned that it just used 9 speed everything, good luck getting a 9 speed derailleur to shift to a 50!

Now if they are spaced the same as a box I'd use a box shifter, a modern derailleur and the bolany cassette. Does it take a 9 speed or a 12 speed chain though?

Play it safe and use a 9-speed chain. If the chain is not worn too bad you can use the same chain...it's not a huge deal especially with a cheap drivetrain. I still have a 3x8 on one of my bikes and who seriously cares about cross-chaining a $7 chain and $25 cassette, that's just OCD.

The 11-50t cassette should come with a free derailleur extender, at least that's what they advertise in the picture on Amazon. If it doesn't, you buy one for $20. If your frame is modern, it should fit easily and then you put the rear derailleur on the bottom of that and setup everything else normally. You can probably use any 9-speed rear derailleur like Alivio, Deore, XT, whatever. If the frame is older, the derailleur hanger is usually a bit too big for the extender to fit and you have to shave it down a few millimeters. If you haven't done something like this before, I really recommend you take it to a bike shop and have them do it for $20-30. I have the 11-52t 11-speed version for $65. It...shifts. It works. It's very, very heavy and cogs 1-2 don't sound very polished, but it works. For 9-speed, you can't complain, it's new technology, imperfect as it may be.
