Any chance any new owners/riders have Ibis Ripmo ride experience and would compare? I know - they are not the same "class" of "something-country" bike But I just saw one of these at the local shop, read a couple (altho limited) reviews/.videos and feel this bike is made for where and what I ride regularly with the chops to push it into more rad territory... my v2 Ripmo is quite impressive all around, but this thing is speaking to me - if only could be demoed. Thanks in advance if any feedback

With a zero stack lower? Or with a 7.5 or 10mm?

 

Picked mine up last night from the shop. Large C50, fully stock with tubes. Weighs under 28.5 lbs. I haven't swapped parts over for what I'm actually going to run, but I will say, the oem stem and bars at 31.8 make the bike look cheap. Looks like im ordering some bars.

 

Glad to know the weight! I don't have a scale at home so I was going off what the site said.

Rocky always specs their bikes with cheap, shiny black bars that definitely don't fit the look or feel of their bikes. I always change them out for Raceface stuff anyway so I've gotten used to that reality, but it would be nice to see at least Aeffect level stuff coming stock on these bikes, I agree. I am going with a 50 or 60mm stem and I'll cut a set of Turbine bars down to 780mm to run with a 35 clamp.

I do really like that the C50 comes with an XT shifter and derailleur, I would have swapped to an XT if it was SLX but it's just one fewer thing to do.

 

Somehow.... my stock C50 snagged bike of the day on Vital. Likely because of all the bottle cage action lol.

So.... C50 Size Large. Never weight weenied in the past, but have been tracking the weight.

28.59lbs with tubes, no pedals, completely stock.
28.46lbs with NO tubes, but Cushcore XC added in the rear & Wolftooth dropper lever
29.56lbs with Shimano PD540 pedals, Specialized bottle cages with SWAT tool in the rear cage
29.79lbs with pedals, cages, NO SWAT tool, and switched the tires for Specialized Butcher & Eliminator 29x2.3 T7 Grid compound's (did ONE ride with the Rekons... no bueno)

I bought a little digital kitchen scale on Amazon, and found out the stock wheels (WTB i27/RaceFace Trace hubs) Weigh in at 1959g with valves/tape. So those are gonna go pretty soon. I didn't both weighing the handlebar and stem, but I will once I install the OneUp carbon bar I have on order.

One ride of the bike has be convinced that I am going to be riding this bike ALOT. The fit and on trail geo feels similar to my Canfield Lithium, and it feels pretty damn capable, and once I have the suspension dialed in... I think its gonna rip! I have a feeling that I will be upgrading the brakes once the bike starts getting more dialed.

Looks like you have RideWrap or Invisiframe installed there. What product did you use?

 

Hey everyone, just spent some time reading through all these posts. Exciting watching the build up to launch. I was in need of a bike and had my eye on the element but figured I didn't stand a chance. Called a LBS a province over and found a c30 in large built up and on their floor! I've paid for it and now just need to go pick it up!

Thanks! It was a C30 but the only thing left is the rear shock and the dropper post.

 

Looks great. Want to do something similar with tires. I'm so excited to get mine it's built and on the floor but about 4 hrs away. I figure there is no rush since I won't be showing it ANY salt in it's life time so might as well just wait for when it's convenient - but I'm some tempted to hop in my car today haha.

 

So there was some previous messages on here regarding geometry as it pertains to lower headset size, fork, etc. and the somewhat confusing pictures on the rocky site, pinkbike trail test, etc. I reached out to Rocky and they provided the following response.

"these bikes were intended to have a zero stack headset cup and a small number of bikes that were shipped with an external cup headset were done so to allow for shipping times. Without doing the external cup on some frames the shipping would have been delayed massively.
The geometry should reflect the zero stack headset installed"

So - if your bike has a 130 fork and a zero stack lower - it's geo matches the geo table on rocky site. Based on pictures posted here, some folks received bikes with larger/external lower, which Rocky explains why in the above note, but the geo of those bikes is going to be slacker than the geo table.

I personally was interested in finding where my 120 fork and 10mm lower landed me - which should match the geo table based on the note from Rocky

 

I'm already questioning how slack it is for racing and mine comes with the taller cup, looks like i'm ordering an new lower myself.

 

Based on what Rocky said, if your bike has a 130, then it should have a zero stack cup. If you do that, and run it in full steep Ride4 setting, then the HT is 65.8.

As I mentioned, I'm running mine with a 120 and a larger lower - so still 65.8. did that so I could use a step cast 34. I'll be racing mine, but marathon/endurance events. Otherwise it's just my general use trail ripper/exploring bike for long excursions. I have a bike for XC already (Supercaliber)

Same here, didn't realize it wasn't a thing till I looked at mine. Might take it out!

I did weigh the stock wheelset on my C50, 1959g. The Hunt wheels in the photo are 1579 with tape and valves! Not bad for $679.

 

Can you send a pic of what the taller cup looks like?

It's the black spacer between fork and head tube? How do you go about changing it? I'll be picking mine up this weekend. It's been in the shop for a bit so likely has it as well.

 

Those that have installed a normal headset with no added lower spacing, which did you install and are you happy with it?

 

It was the one that came out of my ‘20 Instinct, if that helps. Seems perfect, but I have only ridden the bike with a 140mm fork.

 

My C30 had the headset in question installed when I received it. It appears to have a 10mm lower cup, but after taking it off, I'm not so sure. The fork crown race sits inside the cup at what appears to be the same place where a zero-stack lower headset would sit. It's confusing so, just to be sure, I changed mine out with a traditional zero-stack lower. I used a CaneCreek 40 I had laying around.

 

The photo of the C-50 on the RMB web site also shows the 10mm black spacer between fork and frame. Is this the zero-stack version or not? I’m totally confused at this point.

 

I was about to comment the same. It seems all photos I can find have that spacer.

It is pretty simple, if you see the lower part of the headset (aka a spacer looking thing), that is not a zero-stack headset. Go look at the pinkbike field test, or really any initial review of the Element, and you will not see the spacer, you will see a zero-stack headset with almost no gap between the head tube and the fork.

 

Here is the lower headset cup in question, a non zero-stack. I show it here with the lower bearing (it is sitting upside down from how it enters the frame) just for reference. This lower cup is 41g by itself btw.

 

While I had the lower cup off I weighed the (XL) frame w/ stock BB (for a C30/50) and upper cup installed, plus all hardware including rear axle. I am estimating the frame w/o the BB and upper cup to be 2450g.

Unless you have a press, I recommend getting a bike shop to do the install for you. It's a little sketchy pressing the cups into a $$$ carbon frame.

 

Do not have a press, never worked with carbon. Never owned carbon. I'll pay a shop. Appreciate the help.

Do you race by any chance? Planning to race the element?

 

I built mine up early last month. Fox 34 130mm (ac ~540mm)... as such, I used a standard zero stack headset. Bike is super rad. But, then again, I selected the bike because the geometry was super rad.

If I were switch to a shorter fork (120mm or ac ~530mm) for the long-run, I'd run the extended lower cup, no question. I actually run an extended crown race (the other way to deal with the problem RM is solving) on another bike. If I ever choose to race the RM, I'll just swap that fork over... and... geometry will be preserved.

The one thing I am struggling with is dialing in the rear suspension. I feel like im running A LOT more pressure than expected and not totally happy with rebound. But... sounds like this is a thing to contend with on this bike. Maybe I just need to lower psis and speed the shock up a notch. We'll see. Anyone else experiencing this?

 

My medium is 2268 grams, no bb or headset.

 

I definitely have the lower headset spacer on mine, so if that is 10mm, that will slacken the bike by what, half a degree? so in steep it would be 65.3* instead of the listed 65.8*? I was hoping that my XC bike wouldn't be as slack as my Enduro bike, but I guess that's what it has to be unless I change the headset.
