Ya you have to get a new axle put in it if you can fine one. Big box bikes have mostly ditched QR because people are too stupid to use them correctly.

Wow thank you for that intel, I am working on a sort of Frankenstein QUAD project and the only parts I absolutely need from a kong are the forks (for steering knuckle symmetry). wheels and tires I can find elsewhere, matching is only a bonus.
I already scored one Mongoose kong off amzon NEW for $150! but sadly I think it may have been the very last one :'(

Good luck w the project. I was able to score mine used but in mint condition for my son for $60 🤩 on offer up. The seller had a lot of good feedback so I took a chance on it not being stolen.

just picked up an Diamondback "El Oso Nino" on craigslist this morning, paid more than my Kong but the quality of this bike is very nice.
