I ride half year in NJ/NY, and the rest in desert like conditions; mainly XC and light AM.
For the NE I use Rocking Ron (f), Racing Ralph (r). In the dry climate, Mobi Nic (f), Ikon (r).

Do you have a great combo for moist/wet/rooty/hardpack?
Do you have one for sandy/loose over hard/rocky?

Ardent 2.4/Ignitor 2.1

This gets me into and out of pretty much anything (OH, PA, NY, TN, GA - rocks, sand, mud, clay, wet, dry, roots, pavement, cinders, man-made structures, logs, and assorted flora and fauna that I happen across). Not as good in snow, but serviceable.

If there was an Ignitor 2.3/2.4 I would buy it in a heartbeat (same exact tread, just spaced out over a larger carcass/casing).

I've really been digging the Rampage 2.3 on the front and the Michelin XC AT 2.2 in the rear. That set up is on a rigid SS that I ride in Wisconsin. If I could actually find more Michelin XC AT tires I'd probably run them on my other bikes as well.
 
Maxxis Beaver, F/R, on my FG rigid 29er since early Spring. Holy grail as far as I am concerned. Traction for days, durable, lightweight, sheds mud. I thought I would miss the volume of my puffier tires, but I just don't. And this rig gets ridden on all kinds of terrain in the mid-Atlantic. My bike is "prepared for the worst" with these tires, but without a weight penalty. I am in love with Beaver.
 
Bontrager Jones XR 2.25 front, Captain Control 2.0 in back. Super bummed that the Jones was discontinued.

some guys around here can do some pretty incredible stuff with 1.8/1.95 renegade/fast trak combo's, but I'm just too big and lack the skill for all that

For the buff Racing Ralph 2.4 in the front and Crossmark 2.1 rear. For tougher conditions I switch to Rampage 2.3 on the front.

Wish they made the Rampage in a 2.1 or 2.0 which would be a perfect rear tire for my trails.

+1. Problem is I like trying new parts and tires but having a hard time getting away from this combination. It really really works well on everything.

Ignitor 2.1 front and rear, tubeless, low pressures (25-28psi), rigid fork. Terrain is a mix of loose rock, sand, loose over hardpack, mostly dry.

I use a big 2.3" Bronson TCS on the front of my 26" hardtail (100mm), but the 2.1" tyre seems to be enough on the rigid 29er.
 
Depends on how aggressive you want to ride.


For my heavy duty trail bike, the front end gets a Nevegal. I know this is an old tire but as a front for aggressive riding its hard to beat. It sets up very well tubeless on Stan's rims. Grips like hot tar, can be run at very low pressures and still not roll a bead. It rolls slow out back but up front it's not a problem. It's also very inexpensive. Plays well with Stan's milk. I've never torn a sidewall on this tire.

I ride NY and PA. Rocky, rooty, slimey.

For a rear tire... It really depends on the course.
