Does anyone else think that there are a lot of SUV ads that portray MTBers negatively

i agree a 100% but its not just SUV adds. theres the milk shake add the guy takes this wild fall and survives and all he things is that the shake is good to drink cmon. or the the credit card one ,does your card give you rewards and the fools pertending to ride with his friends . in full riding gear then takes a drive.what are they trying to say we're idiots or maybe we're careless ppl. instead of a negative add be possitive strap the bike on an SUV. drink the shake after a fast run or a wild jump. the credit card one is just lame and for a reward they show a fuji bike like that would keep up with his friends who were riding what looked like a banshee and a kona plz. GO RV has a cool add why cant they be more like that?

does anyone find it at all amusing that the one ford commercial shows a biker dropping his bike off a cliff onto a road. When in reality just a few weeks ago it was a car that dropped off onto a bike path? Is that just me and my sick mind....or is something a little ironic here?

Did any of you cry babies note the wink smilie after that motto? What is it about hiking sissies and their over sensitivities, anyway? My God. No wonder you guys can't ride.
If I was your mom, I would ground you from your bike for the rest of the summer. This way, you could go hiking and have some time to "reflect" and think about what you've done. Be careful out there kitty, it's a scary world you know.

Saw the SUV ad in its entirety last night, and I do love the first few seconds! At least they show what makes MTB so much fun- a fast ride from several angles. Think that the SUV in the commercial did actually stop in the end, so I'm a little less miffed at that one.

The credit card ad with the two guys on bikes + one hopping along.....what I hate most about that one is how the guys sounds like stoners. "Duuuude, sweet ride." I can't stand that mtb'ers are stereotyped this way. Once, a girl even asked me if I smoked pot since I mtb! Pretty annoying.

OK, before a lot of chest-beating happens, let me say that I know that there are trails that can tolerate riding in the wet, or high speed riding. I also know that there are a lot of very skilled riders who can ride fast and not endanger others.

Anyway, I'm sure the ads work great for automakers aiming for the "devil may care" outdoorsy types (or posers who want to exhude that image), but what do the rest of us lowly car-driving (or bike commuting) MTBers think?

Just a Monday morning musing...

Just one thought.

If Rock Shox did an ad where the biker was 'saved' due to his advanced suspension from a Rampaging Hiker or Equestrian. Would those groups say anything?

Weird

I don't feel like any of those ads are portraying mountain bikers negatively. I haven't seen any unsafe riding, I don't think riding in the mud is bad, and sometimes bikes might fall off cliffs. None of those things make us look bad, in my opinion. The certainly get people's attention though. I would expect and hope that they're good for mountain biking. They make it look fun to me.

How do you figure it looks good for us bikers? what are you saying that we cant ride bikes ? we dont care what we do and what happens to others? we go around throwing mountain bikes off cliffs . what so if you dont have a ford and that bike landed on the road your dead. see it dont make sence and yes i know its just an ad but like it there are a few others like a said before in my other posting. i dont think being a mountain biker and getting paid to do an ad is any better. what your saying then is money talks bs walk . think of this as trails accross the country close to biking it happens every day hikers dont want us on there trails because we allow ourself to be seen as morons on bikes.

Whatever. You still ain't getting those socks.

Whoah!

Slow down there, buddy! I can barely read your post.

Sometimes we crash. And that's part of the fun. I honestly couldn't care less if people judge us because of those ads. Those will likely be the few that already don't like us, using the ad to confirm their lame attitudes. I think Ford used the mountain bikers because it would excite people and they'd watch and enjoy the commercial. Mountain bikes entertain. Nothing wrong with that. And the good thing about a mountain biker getting paid is just that. Someone who rides a bike got paid to do it. I didn't say anything about "money talks..."

Are you an IMBA member? If not, join up. That's a much better way to support the sport. Worrying about the way ads portray us is a waste of time. The way I see it, the fact that mountain bikes are in ads is good. The sport is getting attention and that will bring in new participants, money, trail users, IMBA members...

Another perpesctive.

I have a friend who is five. She happened to see this commercial and connected me with falling off my bike and possibly geting hit by an SUV. She was pretty upset. Her parents calmed her down and called me. Morgan and I talked about mountain biking and the trails I ride. She is still worried, but understands that I try to ride much safer than what she has seen in the commercial. So has anyone else experienced something similar with a young friend our your child?

I haven't seen this commercial. I don't own a TV. It did upset my young friend. And that bothers me.

Too bad the commercial had such a negative effect on your young friend. Kids do get traumatized rather easily. Sounds like you did the right thing in explaining things to her.
I've seen the ad too, but must admit that I see nothing offensive about the way mtn bikers/biking are portrayed.
I spent most of my life in the newspaper business and one thing I learned is that there is no such thing as bad publicity. (Examples are Micheal Jackson, our current administration in Washington, and drug using rock stars&sports figures. I'm not taking sides ,but for every person who sees Jackson as innocent, there are as many who've found him guilty already. For all the, allegedly, bad things Bush has done, he got elected to a second term). For everyone who sees that car as a gas guzzling monster that is helping ruin the environment and helping to line the pockets of corporate executives with money, probably just as many will think it's the greatest car built and go out and buy one. And think of this..........For every person who sees that ad as portraying bikers in a bad way, there will be someone who thinks otherwise.

HK certainly got all you closeted hikers' knickers in a twist, didn't she? Hilarious. It's the Internet. Lighten up.

So, having read this, I take it I'm supposed to feel bad about loading my bike into my SUV to drive to the trailhead? Is that the message? I just want to be clear the reason for throwing myself off this tall building ...

Bwahahahahahahaha!!!!

Why won't all these voices in my head ever stop???!!!!

Oh yeah, that right....push the OFF button on my computer!!! :D

Right, HK really got ME wound up. In her fist post, she put in the winky face which I didn't even notice....geez. However, in post 36 she refers to us hikers as cry babies and sissies and says we can't ride. Hmm, nope, no smily face there. Not even an attempt to take me up on my offer to take her hiking either.Just maybe she's afraid to put her money where her mouth is. That's ok, she's shown us the kind of person she really is.
My Mom used to say when you put others down, it's because you have nothing good to say about yourself.
So yeah, I'm lightening up now that I've said my piece (again)

Dude, you're such a freaking hiker.

Hee hee!

Everytime I see the Visa commercial, I get distracted by the crappy entry-level Trek you are supposed to get with the reward points. I can't help but think he'd be better off to just keep running those trails. I mean, his buddies are rocking dual crowns and what not.

Hey kitty, nice to see your response, but... DUDE? come on. I'll take the hiker insults and most anyting else you sling at me including freakin' hiker (I must say, it kind of has a nice ring to it though) but I must tell you, that's pretty low calling me Dude,
I did notice the little face in your post this time. Not a smiley one though.
Seriously, I must admit to agreeing with SOME of your comments but the hiker name calling ones really hit a tender spot.
By the way, how did you find out we can't ride?

This posting isnt against SUV's it about how mtb are potrayed.i dont see anything wrong with owning an SUV if you can afford it great for you.in fact i own one .I just like to see more ads that are positive . Comercials are seen by millions so we dont need to leave bad impression on those who see it. As mtbrs we all know that in this sport you will fall and wipe out but why do they have to show that part of riding . Wouldnt it be better if they show a person jumping a gap or ripping down a rock garden and not falling? Its nice to be possitive but you cant turn your cheek to often . The next thing we might see is an ad from alstate showing a biker cut off a car and slams in to a tree and the guy comes out and says this could happen to you , do you and enough coverage. lol just an example lets not get carried away on that last part :)
