It's not only your safety but the dogs as well. I'm telling you this because i hit one doing i believe 22 miles an hr down a slope and my front wheel was not the only high dollar expense that came from that crash. :nono:
You did 22 mph when a dog was around, are you nuts? Would you have done 22 mph past a kid too?

I ride in an area where plenty of people keep dogs off the leach but it's no problem, I just slow down, keep my eye on the dog and my hands on the brakes, works like a charm. Sometimes the dog suddenly decides to cross right in front of me, in which case I stop and put my foot down, really no problem because I'm prepared for it. I do the same when there are kids around, a runner I haven't made eye contact with, a horse rider and so on. The only time I pass at speed is when I have a clear cut eye contact with the person or persons I'm closing in on and they are waiting for me to pass.

If you crash into something at 22 mph you only have yourself to blame as you clearly hadn't adapted to the situation, no matter if it was a dog on a leash, dog off a leash, a kid, a runner, a hiker or a tree trunk. Stop trying to blame your surroundings for your lack of situational awareness.

Its a State Park with rules, so I just want people to abide by them - the rule is all dogs on a leash all the time. Thats all. If you do that with your dog where it is allowed, I have no issues - again, I have a dog and enjoy friendly dogs. My main concern is either 1) I hit the dog and hurt it or 2) I wreck and hurt myself trying to avoid 1).
Yea and you need to stay off of the roads, I saw you doing 5 mph over the speed limit. Try doing the speed limit or under - IT IS THE LAW!

Dude, the rule says no dogs. How hard is it to follow the rules? The park also has a "one way" rule on the trails. It sucks to come screaming around a corner when you think nobody is supposed to be coming and somebody comes the other way, its the same thing. Follow the rules, they are there for a reason. I like dodgeball. I think we have a pussified society. I don't think getting mad about some dip-$hits letting their dog run off a leash in a park where it is against the rules is unreasonable or qualifies as contributing to the pussification. Would it piss you off if I drive drunk and kill someone you know b/c I like to drive drunk and f-off if that bothers you?
You sound like a real AZZ, please never let me be on trail with you ever. I am sure your mangina would weep.

All of you that are having a problem with dogs should quit MT biking. You dont belong in the woods or nature. What about running into a deer, bear, snake, squirrel, mt lion? Seroiusly a freakin DOG! Get a grip and go back to your cubicles or take up road biking. Next you all will be *****in about how rooty or rocky the freakin trails are and want to pave them. Spin boy has go this right, you all are a bunch of freakin pussies.

Um...no. The laws are there because of horrible pet owners. IMO they outweigh the responsible ones. Last thing people want is an untrained dog loose harassing people.
Last thing I want is to run into a DB human on the trail, happens every ride. Most people suck and get in the way, the suck azz riders should be banned or leashed as well.

Reason being? because even local park officials realized that someone going down a hill at 20 mph around a blind corner can be dangerous to a 200 lb person, nevermind something that weighs 1/4 its size.
How do you deal with going 20 mph around a blind corner if a fellow biker has crashed there? Maybe you shouldn't be going 20 mph around a corner with limited or no visibility of what lies ahead?!?

It's not the dogs fault that they have a bad owner.
This train of thought doesn't get anywhere though because if we can't blame the dog and the owner will not admit they are a bad owner where do we end up? Has anyone ever met a dog owner that would admit they were a bad owner? I sure haven't.

Some neighbors of ours have 2 dogs that have shown aggression towards me several times, all of these incidents occurred on my property, these dogs have been aggressive towards other people as well in the same manner, I contacted the dog owners about their dogs and their aggression towards humans and the guy pretty much flipped out and called me a liar.

2 months later the woman was walking their dog and their dog almost attacked a 5 year old girl in our driveway, she actually apologized for that, and I have not seen them walk their dogs off their property since then.

The woman actually apologized for her dog snarling/growling/barking/chasing a 5 year old to the point that the 5 year old cried, but it was very disappointing that had to happen for the dog owner to realize that their dog has serious problems that need to be addressed ASAP.

Unleashed dogs are a pet peeve of mine. Call me crazy, but after getting nipped in the ankles and legs a couple times and chased more times than I can count, I'm not a fan. I usually grumble at the owners that their dogs are supposed to be on leashes. Their usual response is silence since they know they're in the wrong.
Good thing we have not met on the trail, if you can tell the last thing I am is silent.:eekster:

Has absolutely nothing to do with being pussies. If your dog darts out in front of me and I hit it, don't harass me about taking me to Judge Judy. It's pretty simple, if something happens to your un-leashed dog get ready for the consequences. Being a dog owner myself, I would never leave my dog off leash where there are cyclist. I may trust my dog, but I don't trust that other person. So I won't take a chance of an accident. Until then I really don't give a F what you do and I'm going to keep on riding. I respect everyone and everything that I pass on the trail, but I can't control what an animal will do. If an accident occurs...it's only you to blame (dog owner).

And this can even apply to little kids or even adults. People think their the only ones out on the trail and don't look/hear whats around them. If you can't control yourself, your kids, or your dog(s) then that's not my problem.

Well, you would still be wrong.

Also, to clarify, I only get grumpy/lose my cool when dogs chase me, bark and growl at me and nip/bite me. Call me crazy, but none of those things are fun, especially the biting part. Summed up, you know your dog, if he/she has a propensity for any of those leash them up, otherwise I have no problem with well-behaved dogs off the leash.

ill brake and hope i dont run the guy over. Im sorry I ride too fast for you. Humans on the trail act more predictable than dogs on the trail, so ill take my chances. And im a bit amazed someone who is so against the restriction of a leash law is now advocating slower speeds on trails. Would speed limit signs on limited visibility corners be acceptable to you?

I hate off leash dogs. I have two Akitas, and they want to maul dogs when I'm out walking and off leash dogs are at high risk of getting bitten when they run up to my dogs. People with off leash dogs are stupid and inconsiderate. Exception of course are the extremely well trained dogs that won't move more than two feet away from their handler. They get a pass, but they are not the norm and most owners think their dogs are better trained than they really are leading to lots of problems.

Wow, I guess a bunch of you guys have perfectly behaved dogs that always do what you expect, never get in anyone's way, can be off leash around anyone, anything, anytime and in any situation and be perfectly controlled, calm, and predictable. Amazing! What's even more amazing is that you're telling me that ALL dogs are just like yours and therefore should be allowed to run free wherever they'd like, because, after all, they are in far more control than we speeding mountain bikers.

Too bad these guys didn't know about how perfect dogs are off-leash:

Please, oh please, you masters of canine behavior, teach the rest of us lowly lifetime dog owners (and dog lovers) how to train our dogs to be as predictable and perfect as yours. I'm sure that you can school those of us that have had close calls with other people's dogs what, exactly, it was that made us entirely to blame!

My snarky sarcasm aside, there are some places that dogs should be controlled, for their safety as well as the safety of others. Just because you like your dog and you think that you know how it will react and what it will do, doesn't mean that you actually do or that you know what other dogs and people will do. I prefer my dogs to be off leash, but there are plenty of places that I keep them leashed for their safety, other trail users safety, for my peace of mind, and sometimes to keep them from harassing wildlife. Why don't you?

See why I love these leash/no leash threads.....frickin hilarious!

You're welcome. I hope your dogs stay lucky and avoid lyme disease, avoid lepto, avoid skunks, bears and other animals that may tear them apart. I know of people who haven't been so lucky and frankly their dog dead was a result of their stupidity. When you volunteer to help out with dog rescue and you handle show dogs yourself you learn a lot more about what happens to many dogs than when you only have a small sample size from which to learn from. Good luck.
