When are thru axles necessary? Are they only in the front or in the back, as well?

How is a hub adapated to handle thru axles?

I'm looking at buying a Pike and I was wondering what kind of hub I would need to accomodate it and if I needed to look at some sort of thru axle setup for the rear.
ok, not meaning to be rude, but......for the number of questions you've been asking lately, dude, learn to use the search function. this same question, and several of your others have been done to death. asking redundant questions just tends to irritate people. and considering it's 2am (at least where i am) are you really expecting a boatload of people to be awake, and clamoring to answer to your needs?

short answer: for the pike, yes, you will need a 20mm front wheel. the through axle portion will come with the fork.

for the rear, it will really depend on what kind of frame you end up with/already have.
do you need on in the rear of the bike? depends on the terrain you ride, and how you ride.

the short answer

thru axles are stiffer than quick release and you can run 8 inch rotors in the front. theres a thread on running 8 inch axles with quick release axles but most or all manufacturers say it would void warranty. you would need a 20mm thru axle front hub. there are a few hubs that can convert back and forth from TA to QR. but you can't just convert any hub. for the rear i think 10 mm bolt on axles will fit the regular QR drop outs.

Thank you both for your responses. Sorry to bother. I will make better use of the search function.
