I am looking to upgrade me brake system for all mountain.

Looking to go with either
Hope race evo X2
Shimano Saint
Magura mt8
or
FOrmula the One !

which would you go for and why ?

I disagree with hawg, Ive seen these brakes in action on DH rigs without any issues, so I wouldnt discount them. IMO out of your choices, Id say MT8 or Saints, but personally I like the MT6 or new Shimano XT better.

I have to agree with Ambassador Hawg on the recommendation. I currently run Saints on my dh bike and love them. On my last one I had Formula The One's and loved them too. The Saints are the most powerful brake on the market and depending on what rotor size you were to choose, you could control how much of that power you actually need/want. The Saints are also cheaper than the Formulas.

The MT-8's are an impressive brake and certainly could work for what you want to do if you choose the correct rotor size (160/160 for am may not be the best choice) but were not really designed for dh in mind.

You are right. Unless Magura is revising the Gustav there's no stronger brakes than Saint. Plus bleeding Shimano system is so easy too.

I put 220mm rotor in the front with my The One, swapped it out for 203mm after a few ride:eek: I thought I'd never say this it's too much brake:D

220's? I've seen them around but have never actually seen one in use. Have they taken off at all? Do Fox, Manitou, SRAM, or Marzocchi recommend their use with their forks?

I'm not sure about other brands but I have the Magura Wotan and the minimum rotor size for that fork is 203mm(yep you read it right) and max may be 210+mm, so I figured why not tried it.:D

That's kind of funny. So I wonder if it voids the warranty with if you put a 160 or 180 on. Maybe one of those days I'll try one out for fun. Probably going to be the same day I test out a 29er...

On the Wotan PM mount is already built for 203mm so it's flex free and no adapter needed, and yes it would void the warranty if you fitted 160or 180mm rotor that means you gotta file off the mount :D

Yeah, I guess that probably would be frowned upon...

I can't really say of those which I would go for, but I can say that I would NOT go with the Hope X2 in the front for an AM rig. I run an M4 in front along with an X2 out back and its a great setup, but the X2 would be pretty underpowered for a front brake with prolonged descents. It'd be a phenomenal XC brake though.
