I finished up a road bike for a buddy and built myself a new 29er.

Woodies fenders on the road bike. Road cruiser with pretty upright position. Small bag-support rack.

I wanted to try a couple of things on the 29er. I lowered the BB a bit. I was going for 16.75" chainstays, but mis-measured on my stupid rear end jig and ended up with 16" chainstays. Should be easy to wheelie! Of course I could have re-done the stays, and would have if it was for someone else...but because it was for me I left them, and cut in a scallop on the back of the seat tube.

Used an internal binder assembly supplied by Peter of Whipsmart - I highly recommend him if you're looking for this piece, he does nice work and is quick and friendly to boot.

Also used the boomerang dropouts from Naked. I really love these dropouts. I do wish there was a replaceable hanger, but I'll use a breakk away bolt.

Tried to keep things looking low and fast. Hopefully build it up and give it a test on the 19th annual xmas eve ride.

Holy Moly Bob!

Show us a few pics of the rear wheel in your 29er frame - and are you putting that custom blacksheep fork on it or are you using front suspension?

That road bike is gorgeous!!

Yer Killin it over there in E. Hampton!!!

Nice job on the seatstays, they're sweet!

Is the shape of the ST brace a piece out of an experiment gone wrong? Or is it on purpose?

How did you get it trianguloval? It's really going to show up nice after paint!

Yeah... that ST brace is really cool.. share some details on that. Will look super sweet

Are you going to run a suspension fork on this? looks like not much clearance on the downtube for the knobs and stuff.. unless maybe a tapered fork with external cup for the big headtube? will that clear? I will be very interested to see full build (this is one of the areas I am trying to get figured out for my next build)

VERY sweet looking frame!!

Thanks fellas!

I'm building it up and taking it out for a test spin today.

Walt, I have dimpled both sides of the CS many times with no problems...but my frames stay pretty close to home where I've been able to watch them. I've got some pretty aggressive guys riding them without problem. The double crimp in my mind still keeps the tube pretty I-beamish in shape. Seems a little better if the crimp is offset longitudinally a bit. That dimple you see is *really* ugly...I felt I needed to "extend" it once the CS was already on the bike. Again, frame for me.

The HT on this bike is the 44mm HT stock from Nova. Now that I've reamed it I can say that if you plan to use this HT, make sure you put rings on the outside. The first ream last night left me with a paper-thin rim. I had to fit some rings on there...they are not the best, but they'll do for this frame. I don't know if the HT stock is a little bit small, or I got an undersized piece or what. Seems like they should say something to that effect...

That brace tube got that shape when I rolled it in my HF roller..my rollers have a triangluar recess shapes to them. I fill the top one with bailing wire to keep the round shape of the tube, but if you have to crank up the pressure or roll a tight radius, the bottom rollers can leave this shape. In most cases I try to avoid it, but thought it was cool here.

I'll post up some pics after getting it dirty. Testing it out raw. I think this is either going to rock or suck...nowhere in between...

Happy holidaze!

Doh

Crud, I just ordered one of those figuring it was a 44mm head tube and their description just wasn't right. C'est la vie. Wonder what the heck it's for?

-Walt

I bought a piece of that 45mm stuff too, I don't know what it is but it's not headtube.

It makes a good sleeve for the 42mm downtube they sell but I couldn't see how it would work otherwise.

Love the bike.

What a cool variation of that style seatpost clamp. Your frames always seem to incorporate this type of thing, standard...but not. I always open Maryland Engineers posts, they never disappoint. Digging it. Thanks for sharing.

Build up pics

All, happy new year. I got a few rides on this thing around xmas, then disassemble and off to PC. It rides great. Corners fast. Wheelies come easy. Bunnyhops are a dream. Climbing is great. Not what I would call a super stable bike, and really, another inch or so in the CS would probably settle it down a bit. I put some bar ends on this one. I had forgotten how much I liked them! These are the original xtr barends from a bike I bought back in 1990 or 1991. The seat post is a home made deal...we'll see how it holds up...but I think it looks decent and it was really cheap compared to commercial models.

Well, lets see how long it takes me to blow out this head tube. Some new paragon versions on the bench now for the next few builds...I'm done fooling around.

A couple shots of my housing guides. I *think* I'm the only one doing them this way...though we know how that goes. It's just a stainless washer with a filed in groove at the top. Folded over in the vice. Works great, simple, cheap.

Hope 2012 is happy and productive for you all!

Going to post a couple of shots upstairs in the 29er church too. Cheers! B

Way to go on the cable guides, I've been doing this style on various bikes over the years, As usual, I have been making them out of formed plate, ( Washers would be too simple and quick, doh) I have some 3 and 4 cable/hose guides lasered out of stainless coming up soon. Nice work I really dig the Naked dropouts too. I've been working on quite a few versions myself and those are so sweet dang it. Same thing happened to me with the swingers, I worked a bunch designing them then Todd showed up with his and they were way prettier.
