Anyone have any other advice for strong not stupid heavy stems? Is Thomson the only way to go?

I ask because I just cracked the face plate on my Race Face Turbine stem...

What length are you looking for? I will be going after the Renthal Duo stem @ 137 grams for 50mm. Heard some good stuff about it, just that setup is a bit tougher.

50mm is about what I am looking at... I'm going to see what the LBS has in stock tomorrow, but the Renthal is an interesting suggestion. Thanks!

There are MANY 50mm stems out there that are perfectly strong, not just Thompson. Straitline, Sunline, Chromag, Race Face, Transition, Renthal, etc. etc. etc. Pick the one you like and go with it.

I have a stack of cracked Thomson face plates in my garage from Elite stems,X4 and x2 stems. I also have cracked 2 Thomsons stems at the stearer tube clamp. I wouldn't buy Thompson with the assumption it wont possibly break.

What are you guys doing to break all these stems???
Aside from a crash impact, which nothing is really impervious to, I can't see how you would break one that was being used for its intended purpose, (ie not using an xc stem for downhill racing).

The f1.2 is pretty much exactly what you want: light, burly, 50mm. The smooth back is pretty nice the rare time that you beater and clip a knee. I've been dealing with Tyler for a few years now and when you buy something you pretty much have it for life. Even stuff that i've exploded crashing and pedals thrashed from DH he's replaced free, no questions asked.

Also, a torque wrench is your friend.

Probably using the, I think that feels like 5 newtons/m gorilla paws.:skep:

Truvativ Holzfeller if you are on a budget. <$50, 10 grams heavier than a Thomson X4 for 50mm and available in 40mm, 50mm, and 60mm. Also, being forged rather than machined, it might be less prone to cracking.

Thomson isn't the only choice, but it is a really good choice. It would be hard to go wrong getting a Thomson.

Call RF.. i would bet they will send you a new plate.
This. I've heard the new owners are honoring past products under old leadership.

Always use a torque wrench on carbon bars. If you're tightening down your faceplate enough to crack it, I'd check your bars for clamp damage.
