last year i bought this beautiful bike of craigslist. it was a santacruz bullet, wasn't in the best shape but it had decent components and the price i paid was awesome. it was 300 dollars for the bike. that was a little weird to me, why would someone well it that cheap? but i bought it anyways

a week or two later my brother and i got back from a ride and the bikes were on the back, as we get out of the car a guy comes halling balls around the corner and into our drive way cursing at us cause we have his bike. he was about to beat us down. it just happens that this guy lived about 6 houses down from us. the guy claimed it was his bike and thought we stole it.

we got him to calm down and he showed us pictures of it and it was his.

in the end he gets his bike back and we are out 300 dollars.

what should i have done? i would of felt like an @ss if i didn't give the man his bike and he would of broke my neck. but i felt like i got screwed. would he have done the same thing if he bought my stolen bike?

You didn't have a choice to give it back... it was his bike. Sucks that you got scammed, but the police would have taken it from you anyway once it was known where the bike was.

Just read this in another thread:
"Ya know, I don't think there's anything quite more pathetic than a bike thief. A very close second are a**holes who buy obviously stolen bikes, but that's a whole 'nuther Oprah ..."

I imagine you gave it back to him because you subconsciously (did I spell that right?) knew it was stolen when you bought it.

edit: funny that the guy I quoted showed up.

didnt know it was stolen at the time. the posting said he was selling some of his brothers stuff, thought he didnt know anything about bikes or didnt know what he had or something like that. police wouldnt of done anything cause only proof he had was some photos which any one can pull off google. they cant do anything unless the owner has the number on the bottom of the bike, which he didnt

Yo everyone, slow your roll!
That guy that got his bike bike back, most likely got paid by his insurance for that bike. I'm not sure how to determine if this is so, but for $300, maybe the guy (if he's reading this) can offer you some compensation...like a finders...?...because I'll wager that guy isn't going to report it recovered to his insurance and return the money.

Interesting scenario...A super Ironic scenario.

Wait a second...this happened LAST year? Why bring it up now?

Interesting theory, as this situation sounds kind of suspicious:

What if a bike thief steals a bike, takes pics of said bike, and sells it to you on craigslist?

Then a week or two later he has his buddy come to your house and claim that you have his stolen bike (and shows you the pics the thief provided him). You give his friend the bike back, and now they have your money and the bike.

Then they just repeat the cycle...

Maybe, if everyone used some common sense, and thought if it looks or sounds too good to be true then it probably is, then all of this could be avoided and the OP would have his 300 still. But that requires using common sense, something that has been diluted in the gene pool.
