Just wondering if anyone was able to solve the rear brake squeeling issue. :madman: Thanks.

It had Juicy 3 and was squealing. I thought it was a brake issue so I put Elixir on and it is still squealing.

I run Elixir CR on my XTC 29er, it has got rid of the squeal, still got the Avid Turkey Wobble at times though.
I have the same brakes and still have the same problem. I guess what I have is more Turkey Wobble than squeal but just as annoying.

My LBS ended up swapping out the rotor and switching to organic pads. Works fine now, just lost a little stopping power with the organics. I already wore those pads out and switched back to the sintered pads and the problem is still gone. I think the rotor more or less solved it.

Didn't Giant redesign the brake mount on the 2011's?

Maybe I should try the organic pads as I already changed the rotor. I have the 2010 model. A friend of mine just got the 2011 and it came with Shimano hydro brakes.

Thanks for the info.

Lets get specific

Of all of you who claimed that they did something to fix the sqealy brakes, how many of you got it fixed long term? i have tried every combo of pads/rotors imagimable, and it makes the proble go away....for about a week, then it returns. I am wondering how many of you ran back to the computer to report that the new pads worked, only to discover later that it really didnt.
Who has had prolonged success, and by doing what?

fast update to anyone who has not the time nor the attention span to read thru that Avid brake thread (it's like many hundred posts and counting) the tl;dr: version is:

This is a design issue with the 2010 model Elixir brakes (the first-generation Taperbore design). Avid has finally addressed this in the 2012+ lineup with a complete redesign of the lever and timing port configuration. It's actually pretty complicated and there's more than one issue that leads to the noise. Some of it is rub owing to sticky pistons, some of it is noise/vibration/shudder owing to rotor and frame/fork configuration. 90% of the time it's more of a bleed issue than a pad/rotor/caliper issue. There is also basically nothing you can do about the noise on certain fork / frame configurations.

The 2010/11 model Elixir brakes had some terrible issues with sticky pistons, noise and caliper rub. I'm an Elixir CR 2010 owner, and the only way I've silenced these and eliminated the rub is to frequently bleed them, use organic pads, keep the rotors clean, and frequently lube the pistons with silicon grease.

The good news is that if you maintain them, they work. I've gotten pretty handy with brake maintenance and when the Avids do work, they work extremely well; better than any other hydro system I've had experience with.

Hope this helps.

P.S. I personally do not care at all for Shimano brakes as I believe they are still using a mineral oil system which does not work reliably in extreme heat (fade), and tends to fail almost entirely (pack up) in sub 40° temperatures. If you don't ride in extreme temps, then you'll be fine using them.
