Chain lube is a often debated topic. People use everything from bike specific lubes to chainsaw bar oil. Try it and see how it works. I use dupont dry teflon lube from lowes - big can, cheap price.
 I use the same. It's intended for motorcycle chains. Good stuff and cheap.

Okay thanks. So I cant hurt anything by using the dry silicone right? Meaning that it's petro based.
You won't immediately damage anything just by putting it on your chain, but it doesn't have the properties needed to function as a proper lube under the forces seen inside a chain and will very quickly disappear once you start riding, leaving your chain without proper lube. So in the long run it will hurt your chain by causing it to wear out sooner from lack of lubrication

I keep a can around because it works great for wiping down fork stanchions to reduce stiction at the beginning of a ride, but it doesn't last long for that either

As an all round chain lube I like the Motorcycle teflon dry lube, It doesn't collect crud and make a hell of a mess like the wet lube but it does mean more frequent lubing required. I generally use one of those on bike chain cleaner contraptions with citrus degrease and lube it every three to five rides or more frequently during the rainy season here. Would agree with the sentiments here your wasting your time with silicon lubes, i doubt it would even penetrate the pins properly.

Also i don't like spray lube full stop it goes everywhere but where its needed!

Sounds like you guys are saying the dupont lube made especially for motorcycle chains isn't tough enough and wont last on a MTB chain????? i use it in my motorcycle and its lasts plenty long in there so what greater force is seen on a leg powered chain vs a 150hp motor driven chain and sprocket? I wouldn't use WD-40 but i think the dupont stuff works great.

Am I missing something?

Resurrection of a 3 year old thread. I didn't read what you read into it.
