light waterproof venting jacket for xc mtb race?

what's a good light waterproof breathable vented jacket for xc mtb racing, when it's really raining at the race...about 2 hours, solo? i've ridden in the rain i can endure couple of hours, but also have thought a real light and vented jacket could be be useful... can always ditch a jacket to a team supporter in the feedzone, if the rain slows.

marmot precip?
patagonia zephr?

It's a race, don't worry about the water

Worry about the edurance.
What kind of race?
Solo 24 hour or two hour?
Solo stuff I don't know. Team 24 hours and simple two hour races you shouldn't worry. Just make sure you don't get a flat and EAT correctly for your race.
If you are in the snow that is really for some sort of freak. :D
Good luck.

I might have worded it differently

but I agree with Trailnut. You'll be humping so much you will burn up if you are overclothed. Longsleeves or arm warmers will keep the water off of you directly and the wetsuit effect will keep you about as warm as you need.

my last ride in the canyons during the rain was WET and cold. the long sleeve got soaked and so did the jersey..was still fun, but would have been nicer to have a light waterproof vented jacket (then again, i wan't going at it at race effort). my current gore-tex jacket gets hot for spirited riding.

looks like marmot mountain works has a precip in stock...here i go....

Okay...

If you can find a waterproof/ windproof garment with zippers from the elbow, undr teh armpit, to your ribs you can vent a lot of heat and keep your leading edges dry. I have an awesome edition of this sort by Sugoi but I never use it for racing because it is just too hot.

Ditto on the jersey and arm warmers for rainy races. The first two races this year (Warda, TX and the NORBA national at Tapatio, TX) were in moderate to heavy rain showers and we were all soaked in minutes. An under layer and possibly arm warmers were all most of people needed, even with the temperatures in the low 60's.

I saw several racers with high tech jackets as well as basic water capes, but they only got overheated and ended up wet from tire spray and sweat. Once you're wet, you won't feel it since you'll be plenty warm and concentrating on riding. A jacket would be nice before the race while you are standing around staging in the rain as long as you have someone to hold it for you.

My first race in rain, the jacket lasted about 5 minutes. The jacket won't keep you dry because you'll be sweating anyway, but it will keep you warm...too warm, even if it breathes. Just get a good long sleeve jersey that retains warmth when wet and resign yourself too having a wet race. That said, you might want to pack a light shell in case you break down and have to walk out, mine only weighs a few ounces.

Second jacket down, the cycling jacket, looks pretty good if you're looking for an emergency layer. I think it will tear if you catch it on the brush, but at $25 its pretty much disposable.
that jacket's great value for its price, but at sustainined efforts it gets hot...lacks underarm vented zippers

Here's what I've used on long wet rides... a cheapass clear vinyl jacket with arms cut off, and arm warmers. For racing you don't want a full jacket

10 bucks!

This one from Performance Bike is light, has vents all down both sides. Won't keep your head dry, but you sweat there anyway. Will at least keep it off your torso.
