"The Santa Barbara trail network, including San Ysidro trail shown here, is in danger of restricting mountain bike access. That means that mountain bikers could lose amazing trails like Tunnel, Cold Spring, Romero and Knapp's Castle if more riders don't take action.
For the past four years the Front Country Trails Multi-Jurisdictional Task Force, better known as the Task Force has been meeting to resolve conflict on Santa Barbara's trails amongst other things. The focus of this conflict is between cyclists and other user groups. So far there has been no determination of where the conflict occurs more frequently or how to go about solving it. However, one Task Force member declared at the last meeting that the "trails were not multiuse and we needed to address this." You can count one vote to close the trails to mountain bikers and we haven't even heard all the facts yet.
The meetings have been pretty predictable, a small group of dedicated cyclists have been consistently supporting the idea of looking for solutions that treat all user groups equally. This has been offset by another group of people who attend every meeting feeding the Task Force facts and figures to keep cyclists off the trails. These anti-mountain bikers are dedicated and want nothing more than to rid mountain bikers from the trails. The actual trail using population has not been polled about what changes and conflict strategies they would like to see employed.
What can you do to ensure that you continue to have access to your local trails? Get involved! Mountain bikers are in small numbers at these meetings and need to be making more of a showing. Whether you come to show your support or want to address the Task Force, now is the time to show up and let yourself be heard - what makes mountain biking in Santa Barbara so great? How can we continue to mountain bike safely while keeping the other user groups in mind?
Ride safely and treat the other trail users with respect. Enough said, know the rules and right of ways of the trails and respect your fellow trail users.
The next meeting will be Wednesday, December 1at 5:30 p.m. in Santa Barbara County Administration Building Planning Commission Hearing Room - 123 E. Anapamu Street, Santa Barbara. If you care about mountain biking in the Santa Barbara area then you need to be there."
