I see that JensonUSA has the LX M582 crank down to $75, which is quite a steal. The SLX crankset is around $115-130 at other vendors.

The only negative I have seen in looking at reviews of the LX crankset is that the middle ring is aluminum and may need to be replaced quickly due to fast wear. The SLX crankset comes with a more durable middle ring according to what I have read.

So, my question is, is it worth the extra cash for the SLX crankset to get the more durable middle ring? Any other advantages to the SLX crankset over the LX? I am planning to try the install myself.

I am upgrading from a ISIS Bontrager Select (Truvativ) crankset on my X-Cal if it makes any difference.

Thanks,

G.

It's a toss up.
Pick the one that you think looks better on your bike :)

Those external BBs don't seem to last forever. Not in my use anyway. Replace, or at least clean and re-grease, at the first indication that they are not running smoothly.

What's a reliable and not too expensive external bb to replace with perttime? Thanks.

I haven't tried many different BBs. The regular "do not disassemble" Shimanos can be re-greased too, which should extend their life span. There's forum threads on it somewhere...

Some BBs offer replaceable bearings. Hope, for example.

Right now I have Shimano's Saint BBs on my main bikes: mainly because I hope the longer threaded section spreads the loads caused by my fat ass in singlespeed mode. Cannot report on longevity yet...

I've had both LX and SLX. Aside from the middle ring, the differences aren't that pronounced. They feel very similar, even though the SLX is supposedly much stiffer. The SLX has certainly survived enough rock strikes for me to be able to recommend it. The LX had pretty light use before I sold it. I'd say the extra cash is barely worth it, if you're looking to save a few bucks the LX will do nicely.
