People who ride baggy shorts with chamois pads, do you go commando, or is that only for tighty lycra shorts?

Seams on underwear are bad. With an abrasion point between your skin and the seat, plus bacteria, negative effects can be -

- soreness
- abrasions
- hairs getting ripped out, which may become in-grown (fun stuff there on your taint !)

If you really feel the need to complicate things I suppose you could wear some under armor compression shorts or something like that under your biking shorts without causing much damage.

I go commando with 7 out of 8 of the liners/bibs that I own. It does introduce less potential for grabbing, bunching and chafing and any substantial chamois is designed to be used in this manner.

The only undershorts I wear a boxer brief under are primarily designed as protection shorts (661 Elite Bomber) and the chamois is really just a thin layer of foam covering the frontal crotch/taint/and sitbone regions and not nearly as engineered as my other chamois are. The lycra on these is of a rough mesh style that doesn't feel particularly comfy against my bare skin, especially once it starts getting sweaty.

Barring a situation like the above, the only compelling reason to wear anything under your chamois is if you don't have enough of them to rotate through w/o having to wash them every ride.

As I mentioned in another thread, the UA 9" inseam boxer briefs that I had for other sports seemed to work as well as possible if you had to wear something underneath your chamois. The ones I have have the same placket style crotch that most cycling shorts have that moves any seams away from contact points w/the saddle. They add a little bit of heat, but their probably the best you're going to do if you refuse to go commando under your chamois. However, they aren't cheap and you're probably going to need to wash the chamois after each ride anyways if you work up any kind of decent sweat.

I wholeheartedly agree that what ever you do, don't wear cotton down there.

No offense, but that's a crap reason. It's like saying I don't ride my bike on dirt, so I don't have to wash it as often. Your not going to let the shorts do their job so you don't have to wash them as often? :skep:

Besides, you can get a couple rides out of a pair of shorts without washing them by simply rinsing them thoroughly after a ride to get the sweat and salt out of them.

Seriously, refusing to go commando with bike shorts is like refusing to go command with underwear or swim trunks.

No offense taken. Like I said I go commando personally except for 1 pair that I wear primarily as hip/tailbone protectors (actually going to try out a pair of bibs under these instead of the UA boxer briefs next time I wear them), and that's motivated by them not being comfortable against my skin, not out of the desire to not have to wash them every ride. I agree entirely that it's much better to get enough cycling shorts in your rotation so that you're only having to do laundry once a week or so.

While I understand the advantages of maximum moisture absorption and reduced chaffing by having the chamois directly on the skin, I wear non-cotton briefs inside. Why? Cuz without them, my junk ends up where I don't want it and it gets pinched. This happens with whatever liners I use, and they are good quality, properly sized. And I'm not freakishly endowed either (just moderately well). ;) So I suggest to the OP that he try commando style, and if he has a problem, then wear non-cotton briefs underneath.

Learn to position it properly, make sure the legs of the shorts are pulled up completely, and readjust periodically.

Interesting. My liners and bike shorts are more supportive and as tight or tighter than any briefs I own.
