My wife and I just found two mountain bikes at a garage sale, but we are clueless to biking we want to start. My questions are:

The two bikes we found are labled by Harley Davidson. I cant not find any info on the web for them. One is a 26" Harley Davidson Duely, and the other is a 24" Harley Davidson Draxus. The frames are in good shape but the gears will not change. The Gear systems is by DNP Epoch 6. Any info will be helpfull.

Thank you

Aloha Noobie,

I did a little searching for those bike as well. Unfortunately I couldn't find any information. What kind of riding are you interested in doing? As the gears don't work at all, I'm betting it needs some serious attention. Without actually seeing the bike myself it'd be tough to make a good diagnoses. However, no matter what kind of riding you're interested in, the bike working can only add to the experience. You and your wife would want to make sure the bikes are working well or the experience will be far less then ideal and when riding's not fun, there's less tendency to want to ride.

If you're not close to a friend who can service the bike for you, take it to a bike shop. I would probably not want to spend too much money on getting these bikes working well though as these don't seem like "high" end or even "enthusiasts" type bikes. However, if a bike shop or someone can restore operation to these bikes at a reasonable cost, you still might want to consider the decision based on what kind of riding you're wanting to do.

Finally, if you can find a friend or someone you trust, ask that person locally about your query and more importantly, if you shop for bike, get their advice.

I wish I could give you better advice. If you were close to me, I'd be happy to look at the bikes and if I could get them running for you, I'd gladly help you out.

Good luck with that,

Aloha,

You probably won't like the comments that you will be seeing in this thread, but what you have is a Toys R Us bike, from my experience that is pretty much bottom of the barrel. For now, just ride them on paved trails and places that aren't rough and where you won't have to make too many sudden stops. When you can, I would recommend finding something better, do a bit of research first. Hopefully you didn't pay much for them.

What do you mean by "the gears will not change"? Do the shifters click through all the gears, but the derailleur doesn't move? Do the shifters move at all? If this is happening on both bikes, maybe the cables are just rusted up from sitting out in the weather or something.

Welcome.

They sound like discount bikes where I would not spend too much time or effort if you are enthusiastic about the sport because you want bikes that are durable and reliable for both safety and just having fun.

That does not mean that you need to spend thousands of $ either but you want parts from the main players such as SRAM and Shimano so they can work well and be repaired when needed.

Good luck getting them fixed up and enjoy riding if it's around the block or an epic adventure.

Or, better yet, get them in working order (hopefully it doesn't cost too much) and ride them like a rental. Beat the living hell out of them. Hopefully, by the time they break you both will have learned to enjoy the activity and will be ready to purchase a quality bike. :)
