What is the recommended tire size for 559-18 Vuelta PRO super lite rim?

I am in the process putting 2010 Motobecane Fly Pro together. It came with Kenda Klimax Lite 26x1.95, but it measure more like 1.75 inches across as stated by others in Motobecane Forum. The tires seem very "supple," so probably will need a replacement soon.

According to Sheldon Brown (when interpolated for 18), tire size should be between 1 inch and 1.65 inches. He does say that the chart is on the conservative side.

I went ahead and bought 26x2.1 Kenda Nevegal. Is it too large for the rim?

Thanks.

Any 26" tire that will fit in your frame and fork.

Depending on your weight and riding style, most tires up to 2.40" should work fine.

?? still confused... sorta

I guess what I'm trying to ask is how closely should I follow Sheldon Brown's recommendations. It makes sense to me that narrower rim, such as 18mm, would have narrower recommended range of tires compared to a 24 mm wide rim. Aside from Sheldon Brown, I can't seem to find much literature or resource at all on rim width vs recommended tire width.

I'm less worried about putting 2.1 Nevegal on 559x1.8 Vuelta SuperLite rim after seeing that Mavic XM 117 with 1.7 width rim has a recommended tire width between 1.5 and 2.3. http://www.mavic.com/mtb/products/xm-117.323301.2.aspx

Collective wisdom of this forum is much appreciated.

SB's chart is very, VERY conservative, and I consider Mavic's recommendations to be conservative, too.

In practice, most riders can effectively use wider tires on your rim width. The usual disclaimers of rider weight, riding style, terrain, and the specific tire apply.

Actual tire volumes and construction vary. Some tread designs are rim width sensitive.

There are some details on my Tire Site:
Wide Tires, Narrow Rims
High Volume vs Strong Sidewall? Rim Width?
It's a True 2.3" and other lies

so theoretically, i should have no problem putting a 2.5" tire on a 24mm rim? i would probably keep riding 2.35" nevegals, but i *can* use a 2.5" tire on my bike, and was playing internet bike dress-up with wheelsets, so i figured i'd ask. and how far would you reasonably push it on a mavic XC 717 -17mm rim, given a light rider? i guess i'm still confused as to what "over the limit" means.

The tires will fit. Whether you like how they perform may be an entirely different matter.

IME the Nevegal 2.35 (and larger) do not work well on rims narrower than ~27mm.

can you name some 2.35s?

And there are other tires larger than 2.35 that I love on 22-24mm rims.
You said that you do not prefer 2.35 Nevagal on rims less than ~27mm. What are some of the tires (2.35) that you suspect will work okay on 25mm rims.

On a side note, the rim on my wheel shows 559-18. So, I assumed that the width 18mm. But, according to the link in BD web-site http://vueltaxrpwheels.com/pro_sl_disc.asp, this rims has the width of 25mm.

There are different ways to measure. 559-18 refers to inside width: 18 mm. 25 is probably outside width.

The 2.4" tires that I have need high pressures on 18 mm (internal) rims to not feel squirmy.
