Hello, I am in the market for a new FS XC race bike. I know someone who has the Motobecane Fantom team bike and I really like it. I am also looking at the Yeti ASR-5 alloy race bike as another option. The Yeti is about $200 more. Which bike is better for XC racing? I've heard great things about the yeti, but the motobecane seems more race ready (it's lighter). I live in MN, so there aren't too many "mountains". Any other suggestions would be appreciated. thanks!

1) Motobecane Fantom Team
2) Yeti ASR-5 Alloy Race

I'll throw in my two cents as well. I looked up an image of the Motobecane and based on what I know of suspension the Yeti will be a more pedal efficient design than the Motobecane.

Given the layout of the pivot points on the Motobecane it is my guess that the wheel rate will be very progressive this may not allow you to use full travel on the bike when set at 25% sag.

In my opinion the Yeti is a more worthy XC-race bike than the Motobecane.

If the frame size needed is a large or bigger, (maybe even med at this point). I'd look at a 29er fs bike like the Superfly/HiFi, Epic, Tallboy, 429 etc.. Fit and feel is where it is at for racing...

Have you given the Ibis Mojo a look?

I have a conflict of interest since I ride one. But if you go over to that forum you'll find a bunch of raving converts.

I never use the lock out on my shock, and I can stand and hammer up hills without bobbing. Bobbing is so 20th century.
