I really enjoy building bikes as much as I do riding them and am really getting the itch to build up a new bike. The problem is I already have 2 bikes. One is a 1995 GT Avalanche LE with nothing stock except the frame. Full XTR/Chis King everywhere else. My other bike is a 1999 Psycle Werk Wild Hare 5" travel AM bike with full XTR/Chris King as well. I took a 9 year mountain biking break from 2001 to the beginning of this year so the bikes are in relatively good shape but finding replacement parts is getting harder and harder.

Im really liking the idea of a 29er and think the best bike to replace would be the GT. I like having a hardtail XC/race setup and the longer travel AM bike. I feel they compliment each other well. The problem is, while old, there is really nothing wrong with the GT and if I build up a 29er hardtail then I basically have two very similar bikes.

So Ive started thinking of building up a 29er SS. Currently looking at the 2010 Salsa Mariachi frame and even debating going rigid. Is going rigid in AZ a stupid idea? My thought was I can always convert the Salsa to a suspension geared hardtail if the GT takes dump and a rigid SS is the most economical build. What are your thoughts?

I do most of my riding at Usery and Hawes because its close to my house but will be riding everywhere and anywhere I can. (wife and new baby allowing) Thanks in advance.

I am not familiar with the Salsa Mariachi frame. I built up a Vassago jabberwocky 29er jan 2010 with Fox 29er RL shox. The wet-cat geometry is excellent, very stable and handles corners at high speed. The bike also climbs like a goat. You can setup as a SS or 1X9.

I have been riding south mountain-desert classic, national, mormon, javelina and the estrella long loop and a have greatly appreciated having the suspension in the front. I also have tubeless setup as well (running 25-29PSI ) which softens the ride as well.

I built the frame up with white industries bb with eno cranks and after about 6 months I have had non-stop creaking. Have used plumbers tape, loc tite(blue) dismantled, re-greased and install bb to white industries specs and still having creaking. I would recommend a stylo, xtr, Chris king bb; depending on your budget.

good luck with the build, it is a blast

Rigid in AZ is a stupid idea. :D

drehder - I've got the eno's too on a cheap shimano UN54 BB and had creaks, but found my eno splined ring would come loose after a few rides. I threw some locktight on the lockring a few months back, and creaks be gone!

i share your pain... i also find it hard to part with my '95 XTR/king/spinergy bike... it would be like losing a childhood pet... there's also the nostalgic feeling of holding onto your youth gone wild:rockon:

...until i get seriously injured,, then ill shoot the ****er to put it out of its misery...
