Anyone else have one of these early versions of the mechanical disc brake? I don't know much about it, but it is working sweetly on my commuter. I think it was the first 'ball bearing disc brake' (hence the name). It's got dual adjustment knobs and works as well as the BB7's I've used. I found it in the shop and threw it on... pleasantly surprised. I'm a little worried about finding pads for it though. :lol:

Yes. There is the Type F (earliest) and Type N (later). The BB7 and BB5 came out when SRAM bought Avid.
I have the Type N because they were 12g (per caliper) lighter than the other versions.
The pads are everywhere because they the same as all BB7s or all Juicys. BB5s are a round pad, which is quite different.

That'll probably give you an indication of how much difference there is between a BBDB and a BB7.

Yeah, but that's just a matter of the adapters and rotors they were speced with. That didn't make the calipers any different.
The BBDB Type N in that manual requires the Avid MDT-1 special tool. The BB7s and BB5s were redesigned to eliminate the need for the tool.cobba said:

Cool, so I can throw BB7 pads in there? I haven't actually removed the pads and looked at the shape.
Also, can I assume that the adapter for a BB7 will work if I want to go to a 180 rotor?

No, the caliper was changed when they went to 160mm rotors. The IS brackets were not changed.Hardtails Are Better said:
I have been using the BBDB since year 1 and all versions of the BB7. To use the original caliper with 160mm rotors I need to file down the mounting bracket.

^^ Do you file down both sides, or just one, to 'rotate' the caliper down a little?
Would a 180mm BB7 adapter work to use the BBDB with a 180 rotor? Would I need to file that too?

I will probably try this... I have 180 rotors and a bench grinder on standby. So standard BB7 adapters is what I want to start with? Even if I have to file 5mm, that should leave plenty of threads for the mounting bolts to grab.... (famous last words :lol
