I'm thinking about buying some Maxxis Aspen tires to put on a new set of Industry Nine wheels (Stan's 355 rims). So far everything I've seen on the forum has been pretty positive. They seem like the ideal tire for my type of riding/racing (varied terrain but predominantly Northern California rolling hardpack). Before I commit to buy I was curious if anybody has had problems converting them to tubeless. Also curious if anybody has had torn sidewall problems with them.

They are a nice tire, fast with a supple casing. At 120 tpi though - the casing is thin. I'd go for a nice lightweight 26" tube and enjoy.

They convert like a piece of cake. No sidewall problems here (ride them in the Midwest).

I'm going to try them front and rear on a similar wheel (DT 240s, 355 rims, tubeless). Should have it setup by Thursday and am racing them on Saturday. Not a good idea, I know.

Ryan Trebon seems to like them.

Twitter:
"Time for some MTBin today, Been riding Maxxis new 29er tire and its light at 500g. and rides pretty damn good aswell. "

"There are Maxxis Aspen, they say 2.1, but its more like a 1.9-2.0ish tire. Super predictable, stable, and rolls fast. Not a mud tire though"

Are you racing the Snake Creek Gap? I'll be up there too (although I wouldn't call it racing b/c I'm so out of shape- let's just call it a training ride:blush: ) Be sure to say HI...

Oh, and you'll be fine on the Aspen's on 355's- I've never had a problem.

You'll like'em. They work great on 355's. Just make sure you follow all the steps to set them up correctly. I left mine resting on each side for several hours before riding them and never had a leaking issue.

Raced them tubeless in a 6 hour race back in November, no problems other than the rear getting a little soft towards the end.

How are the Aspen's tread life? I'm looking for a fast rolling xc, dirt/fire/gravel road tire, but need durability because my money has to go to supporting my grad school habit more than it does my biking habit. I commute to trail heads a lot and wouldn't mind losing the weight from a Nano or Vulpine to an Aspen..

I have over 250 off road miles on them so far this year. Includes 2 three day weekends in St. George and 1 three day weekend in Moab which included a 40 mile race. So far the sidewalls and tread are showing no severe signs of stress. I haven't needed to refresh the Stans either and I can still hear it sloshing around inside.
