Dear Everyone,

What Mavic rim would you recommend for running 2.3 or 2.35" width tires? I know the last two numbers denote the internal rim width and according to the website I can go with the following:

1) XM719 / XM819 -- maximum width = 2.3"
2) EX721 -- maximum width = 3.0"
3) EX823 -- maximum width = 3.0"

I currently run XM719 rims, but am considering going UST although the EX823 is a heavier rim. (~700 g with eyelets vs. 460 g).

Lastly, are ther any 2.3" tires that you would recommend?

Cheers,

John

Need more info even for the rim recco.

Which "2.3 inch" tires can even make a difference. They are not all the same size. OR the same construction, performance or intended use.

I am thinking of the Kenda Nevegal Tire DTC 2.35" Width. Would this work on my current XM719 rims? I am looking for an all mountain tire with excellent grip!

Thank you,

John

id recommend moving away from mavic. they dont have a good in-between rim size.

my 2.1 nevs are about as much tire as i really want on my 719.
They do have the EX721, which to my knowledge appears to be a 21 mm width version of the 719 although it can not run UTS. For UTS I would have to go with the EX823, which is quite massive (~700 g with eyelets). I do notice that the 2009 Marin Wolf RIdge 6.9 came with 719 rims and Kenda Nevegal 2.35 tires. Although I agree that a wider rim could provide a better mount.

Looks like I am going to get a set of Mavic EX823 rims from Mtn. High Cyclery. Their prices are reasonable and many people have positive reviews of the store.

Cheers,

John

I run a ex823 on the rear of my Prophet. I'm a heavy rider (was 250 now 220) and wanted a rim that would last. The 823 is very very stout and holds air on a UST tire better than a tube. I wanted a lighter rim but I also wanted one that would last for years and that is why I got the 823.

Are you planning to get UST Nevegals to go with the EX823's? It would not make much sense to buy those expensive and boat anchor heavy wheels (and BTW UST Nevegals are pretty heavy too) unless your were either going to run full UST or Tubeless Ready tires that have UST spec beads. Full UST will be the most reliable but your going to have some serious weight to push around with that wheelset and tire combination.

You might consider the Stans NoTube Flow rims, 22.6mm internally wide and 470grams. Works well tubeless with most UST and Tubeless Ready tires as well as many standard tires tubeless. While not being UST, there are many happy users of this rim (I ride with several friends who use these trouble free). You could save a lot of weight and still have a reliable system.

Just a thought:thumbsup:

I've run 2.35 Nev's and 2.4 Nobby Nics on my 719's and they work great for me. I love the rims by the way, still stiff and true after 2.5 years of hard thrashing.
Rusty,

Thank you for the advice. I've decided to keep the rims. I currently have Maxxis Ignitors installed on them and the tires look fine although Maxxis can run a bit narrow. I have also purchased a pair of Maxxis High Rollers and Front/Rear Minion tires all in 2.35" width. With these tires I will have a good selection to chose from depending on conditions:

1) Panaracer Fire XC Pro
2) Maxxis Ignitors (came standard on the bike)
3) Maxxis High Rollers
4) Maxxis Minions

I went to a LBS to check on the 823 rim and they were HUGE!! I am soo glad I did not buy them considering that each rim (with eyelits) weights 0.5 lbs more than my current rim!

Cheers,

John

theres a lot of 27-28mm rims (22ish internal widths like mavic measures) that sit at or under 500g's. thats the only reason i suggested switching rims. my 719's have been good, but i can get a drastically wider rim for no weight penalty if i moved away from mavic. their in-between rim is still heavy. can go to a flow, or blunt, or eq27.

definitely give the 719's and big tires a try for yourself to decide.. but if it feels floppy to you, just know you dont have to take that huge weight hit to get something wider.

I am considering a pair of Hope2 wheels laced to DT EX500 rims from CRC for around $400 in case the mavic set does not work out. At this stage, I am going to put a few months of use on them and see what I get. As long as the bike is stable and the tires do not pinch flat I do not see the need to spend more.

Cheers,

John
