Attention Nevegal haters: I am here to help you. Don't throw out your nevegals, send them to me, specifically, the 2.35 DTC version.
You guys probably also hate your maxxis singly ply 2.35 minion kevlar dhr tires. Same deal; don't throw them out, send them to me. P.M. me for a shipping address.
Thank you.

I have a set of Conti Diesel 2.5s you can have if you sign a legal wavier promising you won't sue for damages or try to give them back.

You can send your tires to me as well. I live in the PNW, and the Nevegals are the shiznit on our loamy wet trails in the winter. I don't think I would run them in clay type soil, but, I am a happy user. I run the raven in the summer, and I am much faster. But, the winter is just about riding, not setting land speed records. PM me if you want to get rid of your tires.

Ardent fan here. Great rolling resistance. Good soil penetration. Moderate on loose dry on hardpack. Good predictable drift. Avail in 60, 3C and 42a. The softer compounds are probably better on loose stuff. My terrain is nothing like yours though except perhaps the wide open spots at the lift parks.

Also consider the Larsen. all ramped knobs really fast rolling but traction very similar to the Ardents. I really like these at trail tires. Maybe a Ardent up front and a Larsen in back.

I tried the Nevys and Blue Grooves and did not like them for much of what was said above. Squirmy sidewalls, mediocre traction, slow rolling. Many ppl love em. I did not.

Maybe try the Nevy mod YoPawn did in his thread?

Since you liked the small blocks here's another consideration:

I gotta say I was totally taken by surprise by the Aspens...these things rock! Grip great roll like the wind and corner very similar to the Ardents. I would have thought the low treads to slip on roots and rocks but they really grab. Under climbing power, it just feels like I have more tire on the ground. The side knobs dig in well when you lean them over. Maybe consider an Aspen rear and Ardent front combo.
Alex - are you running regular maxxis tires on Mavic UST rims with stans or using tubes? I have UST racing ralphs on the Flux but may try the aspens tubless with stans on my 819s to save weight. also, do you know of any plans for ardents in UST flavour? would be worth trying versus the highrollers - our crews perennial favourites

For getting my DH / FR on, I tried running single ply whatevers including Nevegal (tubeless or not) just to keep the weight down, but it always ends up with me sitting next to the bike wheels upside down.

This stuff causes tires to cry and spit. It doesn't matter if Nevegals or not, any single ply tire will fail here. Nice pic of tire molding in 2nd pic.

Give me slow rolling compromise if I can get down without a flat.
thats a funy looking DHR MJ :D I had an Orange one just like it ah I mean blue :p

I agree 2ply wheres its at for a FR Dh rig even a real RFX!

Rolling resisitance from hell.

Ok, I finally gave in to the hype - so many screaming reviews and shoot-outs in MBA magazine.

They come stock on a lot of good bikes.

So I bought a pair of Nevies - DTC compound. Put a 2.35 on front and a 2.1 on back on my trusty Flux.

Coming off a pair of Small Block 8's, I feel like I am riding through maple syrup. I keep checking to see if I have a flat or if I am pushing too hard a gear.

I of course know that I went from one extreme to the other. The Small Block are fast and offer little traction when it gets dusty deepy loosey.

And yes the Nevies grab the smooth rock scrambles and grip the corners.

But is riding through applesauce the rest of the day the penalty I have to pay?:madman:

And yes, the trail conditions are almost identical before and after tire change.

What up?
Y since ya already got the Nevs before throwing em away like others have said I'd go back to the SB 8s on the rear throw the 2.1 Nev upfront! 2.35 for the Flux seems like OTT unless ya like big floaty tires, the 2.1 will stil corner great on the size of rig!

There are much better tires than the Nev these days, its been around forever, some good suggestions above, Nobby Nic is another good tire for front of the Flux and Racing Ralph rear, Maxxis have some great new tires out like Zilla said Apsens and another I can't remember but looks fast!

Not sure on the Ardent as a front tire in small sizes myself, too tall and rolly profile on the the narrower rims, the Maxxis Hardorck which was a smaller Minion was a great tire for the front not sure if it still exists.. I like the Ardent but for me only as a rear tire, I don't rate it up front, but then I'm a Minion only man up front for my rig!

Anyways tires are always a good discussion, so many variables so many ride styles terrain etc! Ive not tried the newer conti's Im a Maxixs man like Zilla so unlikely, but sound promising, but don;t throw out the Nevs till ya tried em in that combo, should be awhile before ya wear em out now!

BZ and TA, as much as would like to take credit for that rider, that is not me. It's a friend of mine that has successfully navigated that corner. Something of which I've never done. I can get down to that corner (sometimes) but I haven't turned it without dabbing or stopping.

No cleans in that section for me yet. :cryin:

I was just posting that up as an example of some of the rocky goodness here that requires 2 ply.

Hey TA, how's the recovery going?

I feel it man. There's this hellatiously steep and chunky corner on BMW/Stigmata at Diablo I have yet to clean. I see it, (with double vision from the vibrations) I know it's there, but it's a hard rt angle, off camber and at least axle deep in pointed square edge granite. I gotta get a pic of that next season.

Wilks broutha, As much as I love the High Rollers, I'm done with em.... great tires but seriously, the Ardents top them in all respects for me.

No UST or tubeless.
If a semi-sumo like me can roll em, single ply with std tubes, on my spot and DH casing with std 2.5 tubes on my Highline anyone can. IIRC I only PF'd once on the HL this year...and I've been running 35psi or less on both bikes. That's right, a UST zealot like me has been on tubes pretty much all season.
I'd say check with Maxxis to see if they are going to do a UST Ardent. They should, IMO it's got a great range and is good for anything from XC to DH. (in appropriate size compound and casing)

Right now my fav xc/trail setup is Ardent(f)/Aspen(r) . TA, Curious, what do you recommend up front? BTW I haven't tried the Minions yet... but will very soon. Looks a little too much for xc and trail but I haven't seen a 2.25 or whatever in person.
FWIW my previous favorite front tire was the Fat Albert but it was too expensive, hard to find and kept shedding knobs.

Hey bud, Minion 2.7 would be good for you on the HL super tacky or 3C if ya go a little bit higher cost! or UST!

Ya could go 2.5 dual ply but you being a big brute 2.7 probably be better up front, 2.5 rear or stick with the Ardents in rear since they roll faster and you like em, but Minion will kill Ardent up front, no contest! You may find the rear breaking out due to the cornering the front will get if Ardent in the rear, not sure but I'm picturing it lol...

Spot I still reckon you could go easily Minion either Dual Ply or Single ply 2.35 ST upfront it will wear well in the front, no worries its a small tire but drifts and for me corners quick which is what I look for in a tire, and is predicable and holds its form when pushed! Rec for trail riding if racing XC then can go lighter, tires like the above ones for Flux etc, the Maxxis Hardrock went up to 2.1 and was a mini Minion, actually it came before the Minion it was a great front tire for XC, DH capability for an XC bike at XC weight and it was fast!

They are my favs or Maxxis, in saying that the HR is probably a great tire too, I raced the exception series years back 2.1 /2.0 these are tiny in 12hr racing and they're were great in corners and very fast, Ive just never like the HR in bigger sizes for my ride style weird but that's how I'm wired!

:D

You got to try the Minion DHF up front bro, best tire of all time for me

I just wish I could still get 40a slow rezzay's :D they were the bestest of the best..

BZ - i ride what TA suggested on my BR for Diablo - Minion F 2.7 3C - kicks a$$ for that terrain. btw i also use a Ardent up front on my Spot and am curious about the Aspen for the rear - this is the first i am hearing of it.

Yea, I gotta agree, I try others and compromise on some, but I keep coming back to the Minion DHF as one of my favorites (but jeez, it's expensive). Close tie with the Michelin DH AT 32 or 16 for my favorites.

Next experiment: I bought a pair of Intense 909's from Jenson a while back that are sitting in my garage until my IRC Trailbear's die on my RFX. I'm a sucker for buying tires on sale just to see if I can get close to an inverse relationship in my favor when it comes to price/performance.

For the OP, SB8 to Nevegals, those tires are on opposite sides of the rolling spectrum.

I agree with Ithnu:

Ithnu said:
Really man, more knobs = better traction, but it will roll slower
bigger tire width = more durability and traction, but more weight
less knobs = faster roll, but won't corner as nice
lighter tire = less rolling weight, its usually skinny so less traction

There:thumbsup:
