Wait, are you saying that there is a public parking lot less than a mile away from this trailhead? I don't ride S. Mountain very often--although I do think I know the house the folks are up in arms about--but if there is a PUBLIC lot less than a mile away, NOBODY should have any issues with this homeowner not wanting folks parking in his front yard.
Exactly...

Rogerdodger: I don't think I know you; at least, I hope I don't. If you want the true definition of d-bag, go back and re-read your own posts.

My reading comprehension is pretty good. The way I read your posts, you're threatening to damage a homeowners property and possibly assault him if he has issues with you parking in front of his home.

Please do post your address so we can come park, unload stuff, change clothes, etc. in front of your home.

Final thought, be careful what you say. Some folks out in digital-land might just take you seriously.

I am flat out shocked by the poor attitudes of many fellow MTB'ers here. The sense of entitlement and lack of respect for others that many of you have is just plain wrong. It is no wonder that many outsiders have a poor view of MTB'ers as a group.

It is quite clear that the homeowner's in the area have had many problems in the past with trail users parking in their neighborhood. They are not stating that people cannot access the trails, they are just asking that we do not park in their neighborhood to do so. So instead being courteous to the homeowners in the area and parking your cars in a public parking lot and riding your bike a little ways on neighborhoods roads to the trail, many of you want to fight with the homeowners? Unbelievable! Keep it up and this may soon become a gated community. Then, our only option with be to park at the already overcrowded Pima Canyon Parking Lot.

While I agree with dgangi that parking at the school during school hours would be a bad idea, you should be fine on the weekends. Any risks of parking at the Safeway is pretty low. Heck, go in the store and buy a Cliff Bar or pack of gum and you have nothing to worry about.
Amen brother!! Plus the bathrooms at Western Star are flushable!! Way better than even the main trailhead stinkhole. Also you can ride up the wash from the park and be at the flats in less than 5 mins.

Not to mention the parking lot at the park looks to be very exposed and would have enough traffic to deter the smash and grabs.

Wait, there is a trail or trail head parking controversy and it is not in Flagstaff? No way! :skep: I had to come out of my status as a lurker and post up on this one. I may be overstepping my bounds a bit, but I think this is one topic that Rocky and I might actually agree on. :D

To the OP, it seems like you should thank the guy that lives in the "ugly 2-story house" for letting you know that you should not park there. It sounds like he saved you from possibly getting a ticket. The sign in your picture clearly states that there is "No Parking in Residential Areas for Trail Access." But instead, you slam the guy and bring a lot of negative attention to him and his home. Not cool! :nono:

For what I can see, people that are parking in this neighborhood to access the trails just so they do not have to ride a short distance on the road are being really lame. Those of you that are treating to do damage to the homeowner's houses if they ask you not to park in their neighborhood are being extremely lame. It seems that there is a public parking lot very close to the trails, JUST USE IT PEOPLE! In Flagstaff, we regularly ride 5-7 miles to get to the trailhead. In fact, you are consider lame if you drive to trailheads around here. Yet there are some people unwilling to ride less than 1 mile to get to a trailhead? Are you kidding me!!!!???? :madman:

It would be interesting to hear what the South Mountain Park Officials or the City Officials have to say on this matter. Has anyone talked to them?

x2.

Nobody mentioned a public parking lot before. That is why they are put there...to be used for access to PUBLIC facilities.

Regardless, please do not park at the school, even on weekends. People get freaked out by "strange" cars showing up on school campuses, especially if the school is an elementary school. There is no reason to cause anybody undue stress about their kid's safety.

And for those of you who said it was OK to park at the Safeway, at least have the courtesy to buy something at the Safeway each and every time you park there. Using a private parking lot for your personal convenience is just plain wrong (not to mention a towable offense). Whenever I park at the Walgreens parking lot near Hawes, I always buy $5 worth of Gatorade and candy after the ride.

Thx...Doug

Do you use cars? Does your wife? Your kids? What did cars ever do to you? How close do you tailgate when driving?

What was that thing in your driveway when you installed my brakes? Was that your wife driving up to the house or just a very friendly neighbor? Do you eat meat?
we allow parking anywhere on our property for our neighbors, because we love our neighbors.
We do not eat commercially produced food.

save your $5, park at my house, and bring me a beer.

While I'm sure you are technically correct bout the Safeway, I've never found a business of that nature to give a crap who parks in their huge lots if you are being respectful, not near the doors, and not there all that long. I can tell you for a fact the Walgreens is cool with it, cause I've asked their employees. And I've seen you park at Bashas for the Quad Bypass, you liar!!! Not just biking - carpools, etc. meet at grocery stores, and the stores usually dont care unless their lots are full. They figure you are there, you will likely become a patron. YMMV.

@skinny-tire, thanks for information on the Olney Dr access, I actually never knew about that, even though I park in that neighborhood. The map was very useful.

@bik_ryder thanks for adding some perspective.

@dgangi I tend to agree with your assessment. There is something undesirable about all options. For any of these options there is a critical mass (slightly tainted term) of mtb traffic at which officials or property owners will want to make adjustments (push the problem around). Too many bicycles on sidewalks or roads will cause people to gripe as well. This could pose a safety issue eventually. Have we reached that level of traffic? I don't know.

As a mountain biker I have not had an issue with this as I will just ride a little further. Is ideal, naw, but so what. If I should have an encounter with a ticked off neighbor it will probably not help my outlook, but right now, I happy.

As a hiker using telegraph pass as an access point, these signs have set my blood on fire, as well as the nasty looks neighbors can give me. I have walked an extra mile to get to my trail head. Nor does the cluster up at the trail head parking lot. But I get over it, once I get away from cars.

As has pointed out, what really ticks me off more then anything else is the arrogance of the signs. Additionally, they provide no alternative (park "here" instead). They just make you feel unwelcome and that's a bad vibe to get before you head out for a good time. I am sure they might make some of the homeowners feel better though.

Wish I had some answers or a battle plan, but I don't.

yes yes yes... all well and good or not, the real question now is what YMMV means!

That is something that I hadn't thought about. Maybe if someone were to place a map to Western Star Park Parking lot on the signs at the access point would help the situation. Hmmmm......

I talked to a parks employee today who stated the sign was put up by the Streets Department as a result of complaints made by the neighoborhood residents. PD is keeping an eye on it, but not sure if any citations have been writted (like I quesitoned in my previous post).

Just use Western Star Park and give these people a break. You pretty much have to drive past the park to get to the San Gabriel access anyway......

Maybe this will end it...

After reading this post for the past week, and barfing my brains out over the nonsensical arguments as to why MTBRs should be able to park here, and what people will do to the residents and their houses I think (hope) I have come up with a solution to end the debate.

I have mailed an anonymous (not anymore I guess) letter to all of the homeowners on the block, as well as the mayor, city manager, chief of police, lieutenants of the Phoenix police Ahwatukee precinct, and cyber crimes unit and the heads of the parks, and streets depts. Contained in this letter is a copy of this thread, as well as the URL, so they can stay updated, and whatever personal info I have been able to obtain about everyone from their profiles, and past posts.

Have a nice day, and remember, be nice.

That would not be acceptable, how would we continue to cram more people on the mountain with less parking??
