The real answer is:

Taking everything as a whole, and reviewing both Specialized and Honda from a rear economics down standard, it is clear that the gross sales of each entity results in far less income than a single revenue S company that deals in both international and national markets. I have done the analysis and looking at the EBIDTA of each, if each entity reversed its high end product ratio, the end result is the same.

I spent $2600 I didn't have on my SS and have never regretted it. It paid for itself in good times within the first year. And has kept on paying, 5 years later.

Part of the problem I think is that so many of you just collect bikes. Buy one or two you like and ride the piss out of them. This gear queer mentality where everyone gets more enjoyment out of shopping, deliberating, buying and upgrading than they do out of being on the trails is bunk. Bunk, I say!

I also ride a 06 CRF450r , I would honestly say the costs are a little more for the dirtbike. BUT i dont race my dirtbike everyweekend I dont abuse it i keep up on maint. I just trail ride it and dune ride occasion ET motopark. I use my bicycle more often and have less issues.

I bought the bike in mid 07 brand new and have only shimmed valves twice, checked more than that but i think that was between 100-200 dollars at a shop had fork seals replaced recently between 100-200 many oil changes at around 30 dollars a pop including filter id say oil change every 2-3 rides. ive gone through around 4-5 tires which are around 80 dollars(maxxis) new plastics twice around 100 dollars each time. gone through around 3 rear sprockets i think they are around 50 dollars. gone through 2 chains i think they are are around 100 dollars for a real good chain.

start adding it up and it gets expensive and i honestly dont ride it that often in fact i only ride it about 6 months a year and i ride my bike all year.

so the bicycle gets more hours of use less maint cheaper maint costs.

I do beat up my bicycle but it seems to take it like a champ.

I was told that my particular frame cost Iron Horse 1500 just to fab this is what Taiwan charged Iron horse then they marked it up.

Im not sure what a crf frame would cost but most of the parts are around the same price if you average them out. but yeah you dont have to pedal a dirtbike which is nice.

Good point. What's the cost/hr of a motorcycle vs a bike? Depends on how much you ride each of course.

I have had this thought many times...
For me, I go into the moto dealer (I don't own a moto bike, just a little 50 quad for the kids) and I stop and sit on the CRF450 or whatever, and I just cannot believe how much value you get for your money. I saw a honda on sale for 3995 one day BRAND new.
I understand all of the reasons... but it still just shocks the hell out of me when I'm sitting there looking at this sweet machine. It is the opposite feeling of when you turn over the tag at the bike shop and see 8995 and just gulp..sooo farrr away, not possible, never ever will I spend that kind of money for this sweet rig.

How about $60 for a single camming device for climbing? Or $200 piece of rope?

Back in the day when I cared less about my well being - my skydiving container - a sturdy backback :) - was north of $2000 form Mirage Systems, custom Safire canopy about the same, that is just bunch of nylon stitched together, right?. Beeper, altimeter, Cypres.. Damn that was all a lot of money to just fall out of an airplane.

Toys are expensive..

Bicycle companies have done an excellent job at marketing. They fill the magazines with reviews of insanely priced bikes, and then when it's time to buy a new ride $2,500 starts to look down-right cheap in comparison. I don't know what the mark-up for a moto is, but I'm guessing it's a lot less than the standard 40% we pay for the privilege of buying from an LBS.

Bike reviews in magazines are ridiculous these days. A $3,000 bike is a great "bang-for-your-buck value" and $2,000 is an "entry-level enthusiast" bike. After reading enough reviews people start to believe that crap.

on another note there prob arent that many patents etc with a dirtbike. where as bicycles they are constantly patenting or making new designs with pivots etc. dirbike is just single pivot they have not changed that in a long time. bicycles are constantly trying to be innovative and have more suspension design and frames constantly change for better suiting the rider. dirtbikes are pretty much one size fits all.

Wonder what would happen if you threw a horst link on a dirtbike lmao

This whole discussion is based on a premise that I don't think has been proven, i.e. that the cost of bikes is exhorbitant (or exhorbinant, heh heh). Are they really that expensive?

Cost of very nice mountain bike, for fun, fitness and sanity: $1,500
Cost of very nice television, for indoctrination, frustration and getting fat: $400
Cost of nice PC, for wasting lots of would-be riding time typing: $600

Badass bike: $3,000
Badass TV: $1,500
Badass PC: $1,500

For me anyway, the cost-benefit of a bicycle far exceeds that of other major purchases Americans make.

it's actually "exorbitant" for anyone who's keeping track

also, to reiterate what i said earlier:

"cheap" and "expensive" are both VERY relative. for me, a $50 tire is well out of my range. for someone in a better financial situation, $50 might be chump change. look at just how many things biking is cheaper than...someone mentioned cars, motorcycles, airplanes, real estate, stock market investing, spaceships, whatever. but, look at how many other things biking is more expensive than...writing, legos, playing marbles, whittling a stick, watching TV, playing vid'ya games. heck, look how much cheaper biking is than...well, biking. some people on this site NEED the newest, bestest, shiniest, most expensivest bikes, but i'm perfectly happy with my ol' hardtail. for me, mountain biking is quite cheap...for others, it's expensive.

i guess what i'm trying to say is "IT'S ALL RELATIVE!"
