Hello all,

I'm hoping I can solicit some bike suggestions for my girlfriend. I'm hoping to get one in the next few weeks as a b-day gift. Here are some points of consideration:

1. She's 5'4" and hasn't ridden a bike since junior high (~10 yrs ago).
2. I think she would prefer a commuter-ish bike with basket in the front and all of that. But, I would prefer to get her a mountain bike so we can hit some easy fireroads during the weekend.
3. Preference towards a light bike. She lives on the second floor and would need to carry it up/down a flight of stairs.
4. Under $1k preferred.

I'm thinking one of the Trek, Specialized, or Kona female specific bikes. Or, go with a totally urban commuter bike...like those Urbana's at the latest Interbike. If I go with a commuter style bike, I think a single speed would suffice. She lives a few miles from the beach, so we could use it to just cruise around there...

Any other suggestions? Thanks!

I can see why it would be nice to purchase the b-day bike in advance for the surprise factor but you should really consider going to the LBS with her and making a day of it. Depending on the type of riding the two of you will be doing and whether or not she would even prefer the female specific design could change your choices. Not to mention she could test a variety of brands and frame sizes.

As for random recommendations I recently purchased a bike for my better half and it worked out well. Specialized Myka Sport disc. She is 5'2 / 5'3 and the 15.5 frame fits very well. They are pretty inexpensive bikes too, but work fantastic for everyday commuting and trail riding. We live on the second floor of a small apartment complex and there is no issue lugging that bike up the stairs, they feel really light.

Good luck with the purchase and have fun riding :D

My GF will be getting a frame for her bday, and we will be spending time together as i help her build it up with my spare parts. That way i get rid of some parts, its cheaper and she gets to learn and spend time with me.
i will definitely second the idea of a LBS trip thats how we picked the frame for my GF.
Good Luck

She really needs to get a proper fit. My wife is in the size range of yours. Mine preferred the Rockhopper Women's over Trek's offering based on some pretty subtle differences. Both "fit" but she liked one better than the other.

The other thing is to spend as much as possible. My wife's bike is on the heavy side for her. She can carry it and stuff, but it's a bit of a tank....mostly b/c of the fork. Her next one will be a good, light bike.

You want to surprise her for her birthday, put a blindfold on her and drive her to the LBS. That should cover your bases and help make sure she gets one that fits.
