good call on the weather Walt and others. Slight wind while riding then got kinda gusty afterwards. I was kinda worried as it started to rain Friday night at our hotel. I had an Awesome time!! Coyote and Walt, nice meeting you both and congrats on the win in Female SS! I was quite tired right afterwards but warmed up to more a few beers shortly afterwards. Clipless was def. worth switching too. The big climb out of aid 3 was rough but nothing technical otherwise(except the length). The rough stuff I thought was the funnest. One crash in the group when a 60 miler tried to pass him by rubbing his tire multiple times in a place where moving wasnt an option. the guy rubbed his tire hard enough to get him off the trail and down.... Those 60 milers were hauling some tail!! couple minor broken pieces(my large chainring got dinged and bend a couple teeth with some big rocks that were flinging up in the rough stuff but not a big deal as I dont reamember when I used it last...). But all in all an excellent trip!! All made it home safe too!! Thanks again all the volunteers and Epicrides for the great event!! It will be on my to do list next year. That 60 miler is def. a no go though!!

Fantastic meeting you! I was so excited to find out "who you were". Could ya tell? lol  But ya know, we've all been there, brand new to clipless, and racing, etc, so I had been thinking about ya, and was happy to know you'd had a great ride, and vibed on the experience.

As to "winning" my category, I wish I could take a bow, but the bottom line is, I only got on that podium (under a fun alias, no less, confusing the heck out of poor Todd, who knows my real name... :D ) because there WERE NO OTHER CONTENDERS! I was IT! The only one in my category. I earned the "title" last year, this year, meh, not so much. ;) I was there to ride, not race. That said, riding rigid, 18T, especially after having experienced food poisoning from an in-town Thai restaurant the day before, I did my personal best, and had a great time doing it! that's what it's all about, right? Thanks for stopping to say hi, good job on the race, and yes- nothing a few beers won't cure, post race. Look forward to seeing you at future events.

That was a fun race and my personal best so far for an epic. I am in so much pain, even now I have a hugh knot in my left calf but it was worth it. WHy would you eat Thai food from out of town the day before a race? that's like playing russian roulette. you guy's did great and glad everyone had fun and no one that I heard of got seriously hurt, just bruises and cuts. Really great job to Tom who made his first 1st place at an epic event beating 2nd place by 1/2 hr. that's a killer 60 mile race on a single speed brother.

Yeah, never try a new place, even when recommended, the day before a race. :nono: Our stomachs started gurgling before we even made it out of the parking lot. But lesson learned! Next time, it's Gerber babyfood, and all other toddler food. ;) That said, Walt was in the same condition as I was, and he rode it in freakin' 3:42 or something!!

Tom almost scared me off my bike. I was riding along, easy like Sunday morning, just picking my way through the rocks at a chill pace, when Tom came tearing through and shouted, "IS THAT COYOTE KIS'!!??!!"... and we exchanged a, "HELL YEAH!"... Made me laugh and woke me up. Very inspiring, the way you guys hammered this out. Very.

OMGosh, we ate at the Thai place too! No stomach issues. Last year we ate mexican and I was hurtin' - up all night, you know, NOT pretty!

Anyway, glad to hear you made it through!

great race

I had a blast on the 60 miler. Nice course and great support.
Was happy the rains didn't show but the winds did beat me up a bit around camp. Still digging dirt out of my crevices.
I ended up in a sprint with another SS'er in the final miles. Great to have that as a way to finish it off  .
Also was cool to put some faces/voices with the Phx area mtbrs. I was behind CoyoteKis and Walt in the beer line on one of my trips to that glorious booth.
See y'all at the next one, or better yet one of the AES events.
Cheers,
M

Woman, I looked EVERYWHERE for you, at the race! Post up a detailed account- I want to know how you did this year, how you felt, compared to last year. You shaved quite a bit off of your time, didn't you? The Thai place we ate at, super friendly folks, decent food, but that coconut soup was WRONG. I knew it when I was eating it. Walt and I had different food, but both had the soup- so that had to be the culprit. Ah well- people PAY for that same cleansing result, ya know? ;)

OooOoo... then you saw our gluttonous, greedy, unabashed two-fisted drinking. lol But you mentioned multiple trips, so maybe you were the one who showed us how to just get back in line with your beer in hand, each time? :p Too funny. Good job on the long haul! Don't know how you guys, and gals, do it!

CoyoteKis and Walt ... it was nice to meet ya Friday night in the parking lot. Glad your races went well. Mandy did great in the 15. She was stoked and had a great ride. I on the other hand in the 60 (actually did ~70 or so) ... Ouch. I killed it to aid station 3. Absolutely flying and my Asthma didnt bother me a bit. Then I got lost somewhere between Aid 3 & 4. Wondered around in BFE for over an hour till we found our way back on course. About 20-30 of us were clueless out there. Then the second half left me punch drunk. Good LONG ride ... came in at 7:14. Now I have to recover as much as possible for the SS Marathon at the Dust Devil this weekend. Good times.

Hey Dave! Great meeting you two as well. I was looking for you, race day, wondering how it went and how your asthma coped with all that dust. I mean even *I* was hacking up a lung the whole time. Heard a lot of people got lost (They do call it "Tour of The Lost Mountains" for a reason- heh) ...

I'm debating the marathon this weekend. Haven't made up my mind. Do need the training for being SS Solo at 24 in The Old Pueblo, but, ack... I broke up with my bike after this ride. :D Maybe a few days will change that. But hope to see you two there, if so!

Thanks for saving me some beer. But I guess I have no one but myself to blame, since it took me EIGHT FRIGGIN HOURS to finish (DFL by the way)!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Girl, I was not presentable after that race. I think Will was even embarrassed for me as he was wiping the dirt layer off my face, under my nose around my mouth, yeah it was ugly! We totally bailed on the after party, lame I know.

I was really nervous in the beginning because I really didn't think I could finish this distance strong. Big improvement over last year but I lost quite a bit at the start where there was the big bottle neck up the first climb. Come on folks, if you can't climb don't start out up front! Lost some more time up the fireroad but that was all me. I tried to catch wheels but just couldn't do it. It was a bit windy too so I ended up solo'ing it up the fireroad. Got passed by a lot of guys no girls though. .

Got through the HAB and couldn't believe that I still had some left. Shortly after the HAB I knew I was going to be able to finish and I just found my groove and began sailing through the techy stuff like I was actually a mtn biker! LOL I loved that last part of the course, my bike loves that stuff. It's just rocky enough to appreciate having a soft tail. I did almost take a header into a tree, but near misses don't count right?? Sorry Pete, I think I freaked you out!

All in all it was a great day to be riding! I was hoping for a sub 6 hour, but couldn't pull it off, finished in 6:24. There's always next year!

PS The 1st place finisher beat me by over an hour! Haulin @ss!!

Oh maaan... yeah, I'm afraid that you had no chance at some beer, regardless. But don't say DLF as though it's a BAD thing. Nobody gets more applause and respect than the guy who rages and comes in first, and the guy who perseveres and comes in last! :D (Hey, work with me... I'm trying to spin it... I'm a MOM!)

That beer was gone in NO time. The guy (total sweetheart) serving it up, said that last year he came home with three full kegs or something like that, so this time he only brought a couple. But last year, it stormed, so everyone got out of there. Bummer. BUT! I did damage control with Beer Karma, because I gave away an icy cold can of unopened beer to a guy sitting there in the dirt, looking at it longingly. I feel... clean again. :D

Great seeing you and Will before the race. I would have never guessed you were nervious.

Finding your grove out on a long ride is such a great feeling. When you think you should be dead, your body surpizes you and things just click. Very nice, congrats!

at least you were saved the pain of being the *next* person in line when the last keg blew dry. :madman:

oh well, I thought ahead and had plenty of my to drink and share. :D
If only I had that foresight. I didn't actually have my first post-race beer until yesterday around 4 :(. I did, however, recover with two margaritas (one mango), and no I didn't spill any on my skirt...

Yes, in all seriousness, I'm totally glad I finished. I considered giving up at Aid Station 5 (that section between 4 and 5 killed me), but said to myself "no way am I going to this far and not finishing." I would have beat a couple of folks in the Open category if not for my friggin seat post breaking 2 miles from the finish line :(. Nothing worse than having legs of jelly, and then trying to pedal the last 2 miles standing up the entire way. THAT was not fun.

But in retrospect, I'm really glad I did it, and even though I I said I'd never do it again (that had to be the most rocky, jarring trail I have ever ridden), I know I will. In fact, I came home last night and signed up for the 24HITOP.
