I just got a new specilized rockhopper and from the shop, the portion of the chain stay closest to the crank is all scratched up, most likely from a previous test ride. Is this something I should worry about at all. Should I just cover it to protect the frame material, or simply not worry.

Also is M4 alloy of the frame aluminum?

You need something to protect your chain stay. Both Lizard Skin, and Sette make chain stay protectors. Most likely you will need a large or Jumbo depending on the brand you choose. I have also heard of people zip tying a piece of a old tube or even a tire to prevent the scratching and noise that can happen from the chain making contact.

is it scratched from YOUR previous ride? or someone else's.
Like donalson says, not an issue except for rust (if steel), but if it was a new bike and scratched, I'd ask for a discount...or something.
Not like it's not gonna get scratched later, but if I buy something new, I expect it not to be scratched.
my $.02

+1 on chain stay guard. lizard skins are the most popular. im sure sette makes one of comparable quality.

as for me, im cheap and i like to find new uses for old tubes that have too many holes to patch. so i use an old tube to wrap my chain stay. secured with zip ties and electrical tape. you can make it as thick or thin as you want.

well id have to wait weeks for them to get me a new one, and no discount. The store gives absolutely no discounts. Id rather ride now then wait. Il buy a chainstay protector or fabricate one, but the only area which is scratched is near the chainring, almost between it and the frame. So Im not sure how well a cover would get in that tight space. Maybe some tightly wound electrical tape would work.

Can you use the bike until the replacement comes in? Electrical tape isn't going to hold and will come off. I look at it as you paid good hard working money for a new bike and that is what you should have.

chain suck... someone maladjusted the front D... it's cosmetic unless it was VERY deep...

a little further back is where the chain guards protect from chain slap... use an old tube + zip ties... cheap and lasts forever... most of us have a spare tube laying around

you can go to your LBS and ask for an old busted tube as well. they should have a ton laying around that they'd be willing to give you

here are some pics guys, if you feel it is just that bad I will bring it back. I just don't really know what M4 alloy is, does it rust or just oxidize like aluminum. I just dont want something like this to void the frames warranty.

jesus, u bought that as a new bike????????? i'd take it back or get a HUGE discount for it.

anyway, if you're willing to live with it, cover it up with 3-4 layers of electrical tape and u should be set...

the m4 frame is aluminum so u dont need to worry about rust.

Well I didn't know until I got home and looked it over. I only rode it hope and the chain did not come off.

but how would the chain get out of the derailer.
usually with chainsuck, the chain will come up from the bottom and and jam between the frame and chain ring.
the chain falling off (from a mal-adjusted limit screw or whatever) at the top/derailleur area renders the rear derailleur's tensioner useless due to too much slack and the chainring can easily pull up the chain into the frame w/ the lack of tension to 'pull' the chain off
