The bead on my folding Mtn king 2.4 and Speed King 2.3 are so frickin tight that it takes all the strength I have combined with a metal tire iron (I broke the plastic ones) to get over rim. Mounting on Mavic Crossmaxs. First time running Contis. I have mounted dozen and dozen of tires since my first Stumpjumper in 1984, and nothing even comes close in difficulty to these. I really like them them for their grip and rolling resistance, but I am ready to chuck em after today's flat. So question, does anyone else see this? Could it just be unique to these two tires (I doubt)? Any suggestions? Blah, blah!

Technique, technique, technique

Levers? Levers? We Don't Need No Stinking Levers!

And if this was an issue with removing the tire, you MUST break the tire bead loose from the rin before you try pulling it off the rim. Push in HARD with your thumbs. This was not an issue in '84.

Which MK and which RK?

I've been mounting my MK 2.4" SuperSonics on Mavic 721 without levers. Had to push pretty hard with my thumbs to get the last couple of inches of bead on the rim, when they were new.

I just mounted a (used) Conti Race King 2.2 ProTection on a 819 with one hand in 15 seconds

So I wanted to see what a loser I was with these conti tires so I mounted an older Rampage 2.35 on front and a fairly new Maxis Ardent 2.25 on rear. No stinking levers like Shiggy said. Took maybe a minute or two. Then I took an older 2.35 Nevegal and that took about 30 seconds to get on w/out levers. Then went back to the Contis again, and if I am not going to use levers I better be hitting the gym, because I couldn't even get close without the levers. So from my brief test, yes the Contis are WAY tighter.

My Schwalbe Racing Ralphs are so slack now that it takes some care to keep them on the rims when putting in the tubes...

I recall that my steel bead Conti Gravity and Diesel were a bit hard to get on and off my rims.

Some rims -> EQ 21 - is hard to put on/off a tire. RK 2.2, RRalph 2.1, FF 2.25, Conti Twister 1.9, Schwalbe Skinny Jimmy 1.9 etc. From Mavic's 717 I can do it with hands only.

Can't be as bad as a Nokian Gazzaloddi on a XM719, after breaking 2 tyre levers I resorted to lifting with the third and then inserting a metal screwdriver in there to keep the bead open.
I've been a hardcore 'hands oly' guy when it comes to removing tyres but that was quite something. My new conti vapor and verticals went onfairly easy, harder than my panaracer but ok.

Other tires go on by themselves compared to my Speed Kings, so I'm with you... I just tell myself that they'll get easier over time, but I think they'll wear out first.
I just mounted a Conti Rain King 2.5 folding bead a couple of weeks ago on my front. That thing was a biotch to mount. Broke all 3 of my plastic tire levers in the process. I would hate to shake hands with the guy that could mount this tire with no tools.

Thanks All for Argreeing.........

....And proving I am only a little bit of loser, nit a huge one. Sounds like consensus here there is more than "technique, technique, technique" and the motto is Levers? Levers? I am screwed without stickin METAL levers!

Hmm..no problem's with Continentals and tough fitment here. Put a 29er (2.4) Mountain King on my HT just the other day and it went on no problems, just used a tire lever for the last 3 inches or so of tire bead on a TN719 rim.

A couple months back I put a set of 26x2.2 Mountain Kings on my fiance's bike. Those mounted up without using tire levers on Bontrager Camino rims.

Last year I used a set of 26x2.3 Continental Flows on my 26er HT - those went on Mavic 221 rims, then later Mavix 729's without any trouble either.

You still have not said specifically which version of the ties you have. Protection, Supersonic, UST?

A Continental MK 2.4 Protection just arrived. No problem at all to put it in and take it out by hand on a Bontrager Rhythm wheelset.
Same with the Bonty RL wheels and MK 2.4 SS tire. I had a real pain taking off the specialized tire I was running tubelss on there.First time I had to use a lever in a while.

hmmm, MK Protection is over 200 grams heavier than the Supersonic and has "duraskin". Can that make it so much stiffer?
