Ok so here's the thing... Where I ride mostly, I'm always slamming my big ring on objects on my bike (listed in signature) I'm thinking about taking off the big ring and middle ring, and putting on a 36tooth in place of the 32 XT ring with a nice bash guard. Will this work or will I have clearance problems with the chainstay/compatibility problems with the crank bolts and/or x.9 front derailleur not handling it right.

Much help appreciated as I don't know much about how all these chain line/bolt diameter/derailleur capacities work.

Thanks, Doug

I find the Blackspire Pros 34 amd 36 middle rings to work very well if the Shimanos are not readily available. I am running 24/36 on my 29ers but could easily see going 22/34 as well and I am in the midwest.

Are you guys sure it will not make contact with the chainstay? Like are bikes designed with chainstays far enough apart for conversions like this?

These will all be compatible with my 09 XT cranks correct?
Maybe. I know that the 09 XT rings do not work on previous year XT cranks. Shimano changed the area by the bolts. To get an 09 ring on my 06 XT crank, I had to bust out the file and grind down some of the ring. I would have brought it back and swapped but the shop was already closed and ride was the next morning. I even asked the shop guy if it would work, and of course he said yes. He also sold me an LX small ring which also did not fit.:madman: :madmax: Moral of the story, buy what you KNOW will work. It may say works with XT, but does it work with ALL XT?

As for the 22/36 setup, I tried it and found the jump between the rings was too big. On 22/32 I can shift and keep on pedaling. With the 22/36 I would shift then always have to shift the rear 1-2 cogs to get the gear I wanted. If I were to try again, I'd do 26/36.

26 36 Is the way to go

I have 2008 xt and just converted from 44 32 22 to 36 26 with a bashguard. If you have an XT front derailleur 22 36 is out of the design range and won't work well. If you have a 11-34 cassette ride in the 22 front 30 rear combo this will give you an idea of what the 26 front 34 rear combo will feel like. I bought these http://www.universalcycles.com/shopping/product_details.php?id=21793&category=678 the 36 and the 26 and this bash ring http://www.universalcycles.com/shopping/product_details.php?id=29928&category=58. You'll also need some longer crank bolts with the bash. Works like a charm
