Can anyone point me to an online parts retailer in Canada with a decent selection?

Everything I find is in the US.
Try posting in the Canadian forums...

There are online retailers with good selection (Brauns for one... http://www.brauns.com), but they likely will be more expensive than US online stores.

Good luck

It seems to me that most online sources from Canada are just LBS that also sell stuff online. The prices are are often very close to MSRP, and selection is not fantastic.

And airman, I've never heard of Brauns. As a basic test for selection, I looked for a long cage Shimano deraileur. Hone or LX were the only choices - both products that are not even made anymore. That's not "good selection" IMHO.

Not in Canada, but free shipping, and way cheaper prices. Just make sure to convert currency and location to Canada to get the VAT deducted.

probikekit.com -> road gear and some mountain gear
chainreactioncycles -> free shipping after 275$
wiggle --> free shipping after 275$
starbike -> high end stuff/lightweight parts

I've used all three, very cheap prices, fast shipping. I got my XTR cranks from CRC for 325$ CDN before the price increase. I usually get charged a handling fee from canadapost (5$) . Sometime I have to pay GST, but that seems to be hit and miss.

its because of the distributor channel system in canada which hikes all the prices higher. In the usa... LBS's are free to go shimano, manitou, etc directly... they don't have to go thru a distributor who may or may not be the exclusive source for a brand in the country.

just use chainreactioncycles.com the prices are good, shipping is free over 275 canadian and you pay minumal duty when it arrives. no canadian store can compete as all goods come through a distributer, i forget their name but they jack up the prices so your lbs can't compete with us stores at all. some us parts like chris king are going to be more expensive when you buy from europe. i use aspirevelosport for thomson and chris king, the prices look higher than some us sites but shipping is included and i've never paid any duty when i've bought from them. wiggle.com in the uk looks good as well, but i have never dealt with them myself. chainreactions packaging could be better but their prices are so good relative to waht i would pay in canada that i can look past that.

I've always dismissed buying from over seas, just cuz I assumed the shipping would be ridiculous.

Checking out chainreaction it looks like things will be cheaper than my LBS even with shipping.

Thanks for the heads.

Chainreaction gives free shipping if you spend a few hundred dollars there, which is not hard to do by stocking up on things like tires, chains, cassettes, others wear items....

Other places like Jenson and Price Point have pretty good shipping. Sure, it is not going to save you money if you just buy small value items, but the larger your order, the smaller percentage shipping is, and the more you save.

It really depends what you are looking to buy. With exchange rates and shipping, often your LBS is not a bad choice, but sometimes the discounts online are just too good to ignore.

Don't get me wrong I'd love to support a LBS, but the two in my town are brutal. One is staffed by kids that care more about their discount than your bike and the other by guys that make you feel like an idiot for not being in the 'biz' as long as they have.

I do try to hit up a not-so-LBS about an hour and a half away. But, that's not always possible.

CRC and Wiggle are fantastic. However, you will VERY LIKELY get screwed with duties and taxes, so keep that in mind. In general, I find that stuff will cost around 25% more if duties and taxes are properly applied. I am going to test my theory soon with some CRC wheels myself soon; my last CRC got through under the radar somehow, Wiggle I got screwed (on a $200 order) with the tax and $75 in duties !

Be sure to read this thread first, if you have not already.

Eh? What item were you charged duty on?

The most I've every had to pay was 5$ S&H and GST. I didn't think there were any duties on bike parts.

Over 25 purchases from CRC/wiggle/PBK (parts/wheels/forks/tires/clothes/etc) and never any duty. Where in the Canadian customs section do you find that duties are applied to bike parts?

never read the customs section, just know i've been charged on items coming from the us multiple times. shipping with ups is the worst. usps sometimes has things slip through but if it's not made in north america duties will apply. why do you think it costs so much more to buy from your lbs? it's duties. some of the shimano stuff you can get cheaper from crc than your lbs can get wholesale through the shimano distributor

Are you sure that is not a brokerage fee? UPS charges very large brokerage fees. But this is not the same as duty charges

Not necessarily. There are several things that do not have duty tagged to them. One thing for sure is educational textbooks. I've been buying them for years. I have also called canada customs to get the charges removed after being accidentally applied.

I still believe that there is no duty for bicycle parts (not talking about brokerage fees). I will look into some of the customs documents to get some answers. I believe that there is duty on fully assembled bikes, but not parts. I don't think it was just lucky that I evaded customs 25 times for several thousands of dollars.

The LBS here get's their parts from the canadian distributor who can charge whatever they feel like. Hence most bike stores charging up to 3x the cost of some parts. All the LBS's in my area want over 600$ for XTR cranks when CRC had them for ~ 300.
