I have a decent headset cup press but I know that there's a special fitting or tool to press on Chris King Headset cups. does anyone have any cool tips or easy to make fittings so I can press these on myself without buying the special Chris King Cup fixture?

I prefer NOT to use a block of wood and a hammer.

Thanks in advance.

I have never had a problem with my Park HHP-2 repleca (Nashbar version) and my Chris King headset. Also, the park site has pictures of it setting a Chris King Set http://parktool.com/products/detail.asp?cat=51&item=HHP-2
Same experience here. I've got a park press and have pressed in more king headsets with it that I can count. I've never had an issue.

Press away...

do a search on google (or on this forum) for detailed descriptions, pics, videos, etc of homemade presses...there are tons of posts out there describing basically the same thing.....a long bolt with 24 tpi, a couple of large washers and two nuts for said bolt

just make sure that the press isn't touching the bearing only the outside rim of the cup and your good to go. I have probably pressed 200+- standard Kings (1" and 1 1/8") and a few Ti kings and the steel DH Kings with 0 problems

Press using the flats of the plates on the press

I have used the Park press to put them in without adapters, it works. You should watch the alignment closely and do one cup at a time. 5 min job even using this meticulous approach. The adapters serve to center and square the cups to the head tube but are not necessary.

+1 ~~~ Just use the base plates on the press and not the stepped cups. Just like the others have said. I use my HHP2 on all King headsets.

But...... if you want you can spend $100 to get the official "King" press fittings. Nothing like dropping another $100 on your already $100+ headset just to install it! lol... I feel it is just another marketing ploy to get your money.

Well, of the three types of King fittings I'm aware of (for Park Tool, Campagnolo and Hozan presses), the Park Tool set is the only one you could consider "optional." With either of the other two, you'd need them or you'd be pressing on the bearing cartridges.

At any rate, the key thing is to press on the rim of the cup, as several people explained already. If you use the CK adapters on the Park Tool press, you'll also be assured of it sitting dead on center in the cups, but if not, it still should suffice. Have fun :)

You misspelled "$30". :) If you can afford a King headset and your own headset press, that should be within your reach, right?
