In the beginning:

A little more than a month ago I got rear wheel built with the Exciter 6 Drive hub by Halo. It has six double point pawls seated in the hub body with 30 teeth in the freehub body. I didn't get to weigh it because I ordered it in a built wheel, but Halo claims 330g with the alloy cassette body that mine had. Fit and finish was nice with a bronze anno on the cassette body, good looking seal system and Japanese sealed bearings so they immediately went on my Sultan.

All was good:

On the trail the engagement felt quick, not I9 quick but not sluggish like some WTB or XT wheels I had ridden previously. They were surprisingly quiet too which was a bonus. My other option was going to be a Hope hub (which I chose for the front due to all the axle options) but the Hope has to be one of the loudest rear hubs I'd ever heard. They were smooth spinning with no play and did not require any adjustment over the last 7 weeks.

Things go bad:

On my ride Sunday I started to notice some slipping like the chain was skipping. I inspected the drive train and found no issue. It happened more on the ride - I started to fear the worst - total hub drive failure (it's happened to me twice with XT hubs). I was able to finish the ride but it kept skipping/slipping intermitantly throughout the ride. I started to disassemble it tonight with out any type of tech info as Halo has none published and google provided nothing. The end caps came off with 5mm hex wrenches which exposed the 10mm hex flats inside the axle. I inserted 2 wrenches and tried to turn it - nothing. So I tried a bit harder. Crack, the wrench broke out of the side of the axle! ok....now what? Lots of banging, pliers and hammers forced the freehub body off the axle reveling the damaged tooth that was the root of my problem.

Now What?:

I need a new axle and a new freehub body so I go back to the Halo site and look up the US distributor. The link leads me to BTI and I start browsing their inventory of spares hub parts. Guess what? No parts for the 6 drive. Call is put in to Red Barn - we'll see.

The silver lining:

The hub seems to be very well sealed. There was not even a spec of dirt inside any of the bearings on in the drive mechanism. The bearings were still smooth and still had grease in them.

That's it for now :madman:

Do the pawls engage alternately (i.e. 3 at a time)? What do you think caused the damaged freehub body tooth? Were all 6 pawls engaging correctly?

If they can't get any parts, I know who the actual manufacturer is. You can try and relay a message to them. Be prepared to speak Chinese. I've tried to contact Halo direct in the UK. One might as well be dead. Another company that brands those hubs for their own line actually answered my question. Cheers for them, and they carry freehubs for the one like the Supadrive, but I never checked on the six drive.

Got any pics of the actual part and how it looks?

I don't know. Halo does not specify but I think it grabs the fisrt tooth on the pawl one three and the second on the other three.

The grease on the pawls was very sticky and thick which might have caused them to stick down.

Sorry JC. No pics.

I emailed Ison Distribution with the contact info from the Halo site last night and I had a response this morning. They are sendng warranty replacement parts to me.

I'd call that really great service!

If I can bum a camera I'll try to get some pics.

The picture of the Halo rear hub looks very much like a brand that is sold in BC by Dirty Parts.

I had a set, that I used on my XC/AM bike for a short while. The first hub blew something up inside the hub that lead to the skipping type feel that the OP mentioned. The shop that did the warranty work replace the broken parts and off I was for another 2-3 rides.

The second hub broke again while trying to power (I do use the term power quite synically, as I have a wonky knee that won't allow me to push very hard) up a technical climb. Luckily my stem on my bike is not too sharp on the corners because when the hub broke again I slammed my wonky knee right into the stem and handle bar. The aluminum axle as shown in the picture sheared in half.

I still have the POS in my workshop to remind me to buy quality. I typically keep two sets of wheels build up for each bike. I now run, Hadley and Hope on my FR bike, and Hope and Easton Havocs on my XC/AM bike.

Good luck to the OP. If the Halo is anything like the hub I had, I would say it's time to move onto something better.

Haven't rode on the I9 or even know anybody that rides them, but from what I have read the I9s are top notch and they certainly have the bling factor nailed.
This will be set #3 on as many bikes! They are sweet. The Halo hub will go to the SS.

That freewheel assembly looks exactly like the KT hubs on my Reynolds road wheels. Could they be made in the same factory?

I got the replacement parts middle of last week and finally got it all back together yesterday. The sales guy at ID was a pleasure to deal with and sent all parts free of charge.

I'll be putting it back on the trail as soon as the rain finally stops.
