Us SoCalers were in shock this week as we were assaulted with like 4" - 6" of rain over the course of about 3 days this week. Our news coverage called it "Stormwatch" etc.
It hadn't really rained here since April, so the rain was a welcome thing and man, the trails soaked it up good. Is this what it's like in Oregon?
I went for a recon mission today at "lunch" to scope out how one of our main trails faired. This one generally drains pretty well considering the gravel/clay content.
As you can see, no mud slicks needed. One day of sunshine and it's nice and tacky w/ no dust even!
Came around a blind corner, just past the apex this bog caught me. I attempted the wheelie method to cross it. I was successful but the back wheel started going way sideways about halfway across, whoaoaoaoa. Talk about clay, that stuff held my Vulture up just fine.
This is the first hill that crosses my mind whenever I see/hear people talk about running 34x16 and the like. Pictures don't do it justice, but this bad boy sucks! I'd call it at least 300 yards.. 60% of which, for me, requires about 95% output, and the other 40% about 75%. When I first jumped to the 29er and hadn't adjusted my gearing, I couldn't make it. It's also the hill when most SoCal SSers pass the geared folk who manage to gasp out the standard, "oh my...you're on a....."
Anyway, back to regularly scheduled programming.
