Surly recommends the 8-speed chain. I've been running the pc-48 version for over 3 years with no problems ever. I usually replace my chain every spring.

Use an 8,9, or 10 speed chain. The typical SS specific chains are wide and are only good for bikes with poor chain line as they have some side to side play on the cog/chain. If you have good chain line, go with a 9 speed sram with the power link.

Yes...

I beleive there is a substantial difference in durability between the regular and nickel version of the PC1. I've had great success with the nickel version, and I guess I 'mash'.
Big difference. The non-nickle version is complete junk. The nickle coated is a very good chain.

Are you running 1/8" cogs/rings? 3/32" chains really don't run at all on a 1/8" cogs - it forces the teeth up into the space that is clear for a 3/32 wide face against the bushing, and can load the sideplates and push them off the pins, basically forcing the chain to fail in a "snapping" type of failure. Most track cogs, etc... are 3/32" width. You can run a 1/8" BMX-width chain on a narrower cog - no problem, potential "slop" but usually not a big issue. 1/8" cogs/chains will tend to wear longer, as there is more face on the tooth for the load to be distributed over. While I like SRAM products for multi-speed, I think I prefer KMC's chains for SS - using a 1/8" system. If I had a 3/32" gear/cog, I would likely run an 8-spd SRAM. I went though a non-nickel PC-1 in about 5 weeks recently - was not happy. My KMC (OEM) chain was a year old and still within limits - I replaced it as a preventative maintenance thing. Went back to KMC last week after breaking the bushings on a PC-1.

I've been running the nickle plated version for 3 years now. I've never had a problem. I compaired the last one I replaced with the new one and it showed vertually no sign of slop or wear after a season of usage. I weigh almost 200#. That chain is now doing time on my son's BMX bike. I have never tried the non plated version though. I guess I like the bling bling of nickle.
