looking for a DSLR finally. I need to step up my game.basically deciding between a Canon REbel Didgital and a Nikon D70. I know they are both lower modesl but tis all that can be afforded. this will most likely be a xm-as gift(the body at least)flipping throgh a photo mag I found some incredible prices.

Rebel D:$450, kit(18-55 lense):$500
D70:$550, kit918-55 lense): $800

I figure for starters I'll get the kit then my first lense will probably be a 15mm fisheye. I will be doing action photos(mainly MTB) and lots of other stuff. lots of photo to be used in graphic work too and general artistic type of shots. I have a feeling that the D70 will be recomended but it it worth it. I'd love to be able to save the money and go with the D300 for only 500. thoughts?

not on a website...picked up an issue of PRO Digital Imaging magazine today and that was the price of one of the retailers that had an ad in the mag. The company doesn't seem to have a website.the ad in the mag for http://www.a&mphotoworld.com has the rebel D listed at$424 and $524 for the kit. $610 for the D70 and $790 for the kit.

why is the D70 kit such a jump over the body only compared to the canon. the the nikon kit lense much better or something?

edit: lol they have their website listed in their ad incorrectly the actual site is http://www.amphotoworld.com

it comes down to cost really. this is going to be my xmas gift from my parents and I have no extra $ to add to it right now. I think it will be an eraly gift though :-D 2.5 fps vs 3 fps doesn't matter much to me. I know I tihnk I would rather have the D70 for the buffer and flash sync but I'll live with the rebel. I tihnk its going to depend more on the lenses that I pick up. I hope

the kit lens that comes on the rebel is actually really good. one lens that ive heard people really recomend for a cheap and awesome lens is the 50mm f1.8 i think its f1.8. its like 70 bucks.

but steven has a rebel. i would really try an get the d70 if you can. the buffer on the rebel gets really annoying. especially the flash sync. the d70 feels alot sturdier too.

Ever heard the saying "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably isn't"?

They are well-known scam artists.

I would suggest...

I'd suggest the D70, mainly because I am a Nikon kind of guy.
I would also recommend you check out the reviews of both cameras over on PhotographyReveiw.com

Make sure you become a member over there too. There is a wealth of information to be had there.

Make sure you post some of those images you get with that new camera too, especially on the Critique Forum. I understand the moderator loves mtb photos..

Good Luck!

thanks for that update about that company..another company with a great deal it J&K Cameras. they don't seem to have a website though. I did find their ebay store and they have a 100% rating so far. they have the Redel Digital kit for $499

I actually just picked up both of these cameras yesterday and played with 'em for about 20 minutes each in Best Buy (they hate me there - I come in, play with all of the toys, and never buy anything). I came off with the impression that the Nikon is just a better camera. It's much more responsive than the Rebel, and felt much more solid. Of course, it's more expensive too.

When I go DSLR, I will probably go the route of the Nikon D70 or whatever the equivalent model is when I make my purchase - I simply found it responsive enough to feel like I could shoot anything when I was ready rather than having to take the camera's needs into consideration.

For a budget, though, the Rebel was suprisingly nice - I didn't expect it to be that good considering it is (I believe) the lowest priced DSLR on the market right now. I doubt you'll go wrong with either camera.

That's just my seat-of-the-pants perspective from a quick demo, though :D

Go with the d-70. Better body and takes photos at a faster rate. The d-100 has the better body than d-70. It will stand up to a beating.

I looked at both cameras, get the d-70. The software with the d-70 suxs now, try to get the old viewer or get photoshop.

good luck

software isn;t a concern. I use Adobe CS suite for other graphic so I have all that.

say I was to get the D70 body for 550. what other things would you recommend. lenses mianly. I know I'll need a memory card. but what flashes would you recomend for all around use and lots of MTB photography. budget minded. thanks. also other accessories.

I would say that you were dreaming.

Did you have a chance to read the link that I posted above? That's a bait-and-switch price. You can't get a d70 body for that price.

Here's the realistic street/internet price from the reputable online discounters:

http://reviews.cnet.com/Nikon_D70_body_only/4014-6501_7-30802703.html

ecost.com has some screaming deals on flash memory. I just snaged a 2gb 80x card for $149 after rebate. That's the lowest that I have seen to date.

Lens choice really depends upon your preferred stayle. Some folks love fisheyes and normal primes, some folks like to shoot big ole zooms. Starting with a inexpensive wide angle zoom might be a good bet until you decide what you want need in good lenses.

actually i think the nikon kit lense is the decent one. the canon kit lens sucks balls. the 50mm f/1.8 mkII is a damn fine lens though. tack sharp and cheap as hell.

i'm getting a 10D with the 50mm in a month.

it it were me, and i only had those choices for a camera and i didn't own any lenses, i'd go for the D70. even though i like canon, the d70 came out later so it has a better feature set for the money.
