Hi all, I've been looking to get new bikes for my wife and I for a little while now and was looking at the following:

Trek 4500
Cannondale F5
Gary Fisher Marlin

Went and rode all the bikes today. Then, went to lunch and one or two other shops on the way back to pick out the specific model. Ended up purchasing two new bikes made by a company that I am not familiar with (this is TOTALLY unlike me). My wife and I both bought a Haro Flighline Comp. The bikes road great, the shifting was smooth and the brakes work phenomenally.

The LDS had them listed at $669 each and with a group purchase got them for $599 each. In addition, he swapped the stem (allowed me to keep the original N/C) and gave me discounts on all the other supplies I bought. Now, I'm trying to find out what kind of bike I purchased. Based upon the specs the bike was as good if not better than all the others that I looked at.

Rockshox Dart II
Shimano Deore shifters and both deraillers
Hayes Disk MX4 brakes

Anyway, can anybody tell me how this bike/company compares to the others? Does Haro have a good reputation/bad reputation? Is the frame comparable? Not that it matters now, but I'm just curious.

Thanks and looking forward to riding.

Haro has been around for-freaking-ever. I remember how popular they were in my freestyle bike days when I was ten.... and that was 22 years ago, now.

I think you'll find them pretty much comparable to everything else in a bike shop. Basically, they make the frame and then bolt other companys' parts onto it, just like most everyone else. Ride it and enjoy.

Here are reviews on some of their bikes: http://www.mtbr.com/reviews/manufacturers/2642/

Haro is Japanese for "Hello."

(oh... ;) )

Like f3 said, "for-freaking ever," but they've been working hard over the past few years to build their presence and rep in the mountain bike scene. Check them out in the MTBR manufacturers' forum. Their product manager spends quite a bit of time answering questions there, and responds to personal emails as well. Their customer service appears to be very responsive.

Oh, and Haro it the last name of the company's founder, from back in the BMX days of the '70's.

congrats on your new purchase. I have had a flightline sport for about three months now and have really enjoyed riding it. I wish I would have just stepped up and bought the comp (and I probably would have if the guy would have given me the same deal you got, I don't really like the fork that mine came with). the flighline series is a good entry level XC bike and I have beaten on mine quite a bit and have yet to have any kind of issue.

enjoy

Thanks, how about the frame? I've heard people say that it was better than a department store brand, but not as good as a frame from Trek, Cannondale, etc.?
The frame is fine. It's equivalent to any frame that Trek or Cannondale would make in this price range. At this price point your getting a strong frame for moderate riding that isn't featherweight but isn't a tank either. It's so far beyond the quality of a dept. store bike they are not even comparable. Don't stress about it, sounds like you made a good purchase to me!

Haro is a very good bike to have. I have one (1991 era) still as a hardtail with a crappy fork (Rock Shock Jett C) Still in great condition, Just upgraded to SRAM X7 derailleurs & X9 shifters, 9 speed cassette & new brake stuff. Still rides like new.

Maybe since LDS & Mormons were mentioned, it should go in religion & politics.
Exactly my point, what determines a topic goes into the General Discussion forum or a forum all to its own. I mean really how many forums we need. The general Discussion forum can pretty much cover a huge amount of topics that currently have their own forum.:madman:

Uhh, there is no religion and politics forum anymore dude. No need to stress. F88's been dead for a while now.

Haro are currently better than specialized in my opinion. They are/were mainly a bmx company so their frames are indestructable.
I'm looking into getting an Escape for street/jumping/cross country and trail use. Also very light, and high end components. Even the bottom range escape comes stock with top range suntours. Not quite bombers but for the price its decent, ill upgrade the forks if i have to but otherwise its very sound. Good purchase.

Chill brutha I'm on your side. My point was that we have too many forums. And IMO anything should be able to be discussed in the General Discussion forum. If we all were to follow the current guide lines there wouldn't be much to discuss in the General Discussion forum. Due to so many topics discussed on here currently have their own forum. I say get rid of a majority of forums and let them be discussed here in the General Discussion forum. This thread under current guide lines should be in the HARO forum.

get on some real singletrack mtb trails and then decide if you prefer a haro over a spec. Trust me I'v rode both and spec performs better.

They are both mass produced frames (for the most part) with components added from other manufactures...ride what feel good to you...Haro is just as good as any other "brand name" bike. Besides I like the way they do most of their business...sorry but I can not say the same for specialized.

listen folks like i said in my first post haro is a great bike that I have no complants about. It has always served its purpose and provides as nice of a ride for the money as any of the other "brand name" bikes. However, being picky with the smoother ride and shifting I prefer my specialized. To quote a great man "And thats all i have to say about that"
