Is 2400 grams considered heavy for a wheelset that will be used for agressive xc riding. They are the Forte Loco wheels that I got for free and I am not sure if I am going to use them.

yes

that is pretty heavy. must ride like a bit of a tank.

1500 grams used to be considered light. now weights are getting down to 1200g, but those are for light XC racers, not AGGRESSIVE XC.

if you are NOT racing, but want something lighter, that rolls faster etc, try to get something under 1800 grams at least. a lot better performance than 2400 grams.

good luck.

yes

yes 400 will be noticeable. i have everyday wheels and race wheels. but both with the same tires, but the race wheels are lighter. the difference is significant. much better acceleration, climbing and a lighter overall bike is easier to muscle around.

2400 grams is downhill wheel weight, im getting some crossmax SLs fitted to my epic comp today, 1520 grams, not superlight but light enough, i dont know how much weight im saving on the stock wheels but im looking forward to trying them out

FYI
I ran DT-Swiss rims on Specialized hubs (1800g-1900g) and WTB DH (2500) back to back.
I usually do about 8-10 miles 60% climbing. The end of this trail would leave me tired, but a second run was surely possible. Switch to a heavier set and I was gassed 3/4 though the first run.
I talked to someone about it and it was like a 40% increase in effort to spin the heavy wheelset.

I agree with that. I mounted these wheels up and took em for a spin. now I usaully do two laps around a 4.5 mile loop and after the first lap I was pretty dam tired. there was a noticable difference in the amount of effort that it took to pedal uphill.

These wheels are going to be put aside for a future bike build.
Thanks for all the help:thumbsup:

Isn't the Loco actually an Azonic Outlaw? I have the Loco front wheel in 20mm and it's HEAVY. Is there such a thing as a 'light' 20mm front hub/rim?
I think the Loco is a 32 spoke version of the Outlaw. Alex rims and I forget what hubs.

Light as you want to go with 20mm with a handbuild, just spec a 20mm hub. WTB has a sub 200 gram 20mm hub. Then there is this at 755g (Mavic ST 20) http://www.mavic.com/mtb/products/Crossmax-ST-Disc-20.995574.aspx
