Hello to all:

I'm a little less than 5' 8" tall and my inseam is around 31 (1,72 m and 78 cm respectively). I ordered an Avalanche 2.0 2007 in medium size, but there was a confussion at the shop, and finally realized that the bike I brought home was small size in fact.

At the shop, the owner asked me to mount on the bike and recommended to increase the stem just a bit (around 1 cm). Since I'm new to the mtb world, I felt surprised but didn't understand quite well what was happening. I think they also moved the seat a little back.

The first thing I did when back from the shop was checking the measures, confirm that the bike was small size, and ask on some Spanish mtb forums to get advice. No problem with the shop: they just told me to bring the bike back and wait for another one in medium size. Then, all the replies on the thread that I opened fitted with the shop owner's claim: "What a craze on getting big bikes!" In other words, the guys from the forums advised to get the medium size or, at least, try it before accepting the small. The last option is quite difficult given the circumstances of the purchase.

Now I see people in America is not that way about the sizes, and think that my bike is waiting for me to leave all this confussion behind and start riding :D

Please, could you help me with this decission? I don't want the top bar become a risk for me, but I'm worried about my feet being so close to the front wheel when moving the handlebar.

Thanks in advance,
Random

PS: My size is 16" (c-to-c) and 17" (c-to-t) according to the Wrenchscience calculator.

Hopefully the longer stem and moving the seat back won't stretch you out too much. I'm 5 foot 10 in. and I can ride a medium or a large. I prefer to ride a medium because it seems to be easier to manage for me. If you have the chance to ride a friends or another bike at the shop that is a medium take both for a ride. I rode a large of the same type of I-Drive and I felt more comfortable on the medium. It's all about the ride dude. My wife is 5 foot 7 in. and she rode a medium, but her legs are as long as mine (probably longer). In my opinion you may end up with the medium cuz it's gonna feel better. Your standover height may not be a problem between a small and a medium. I can ride my buddy's large Zaskar with reasonable clearance betweent the top tube and my family jewels. Good luck dude. I'd say ride the medium before you make a decision.

I had a medium 2005 Avalanche and I'm about 5' 7". 100mm stem and a setback post. And I use flat bars and a low stem. It fitted me perfectly - I had adequate standover for a trail hardtail and I never once felt too stretched out.

Thank you, guys:

However, I've found so many riders around 5' 8" with small size GT frames while browsing the forums that I was just waiting for some replies to confirm this and start riding my small Avalanche this sunny morning :skep:

In fact, last night I was looking at the bike and wondering how could I want a bigger bike, almost decided to take it outdoors today. Now I feel stuck again

Greetings,

Stay with the medium...

Like many here I am 5 8 and have Avalanche 3.0 MEDIUM size and it fits like a glove. Of course I agree with riding what ever is comfortable and don't worry about the letter on the sticker, however I think you would be more comfortable on the medium rather than the small.

I'm going to go with the small

Thanks for your input. Much appreciated

I tried the medium size a couple times yesterday and feel much more comfortable on the small. The 2.0 model is quite different to the 3.0 despite of the geometry (it feels somewhat bigger), and I found that the front part of the bike in medium size is too big for me, both the lenght of the top tube and the width of the handlebar.

I think the medium size could fit better a height of 175 cm (5' 9") or someone with the same 172 than me but with a longer inseam.

By the way, I tried a B-Pro ZS-2 17" and this way of sizing is more accurate for me. It fitted me perfectly, and helped me to see clearly that I prefer the 16,38" of the Avalanche small than the 18,35" of the medium size.

I hope it helps other people in a similar situation :D

Thanks and greetings,
