holy balls -

qbp finally got a part number listed for them, and it reveals a $120 MSRP per rim. Im a staunch Salsa supporter, but thats gonna be a lot of work competing against the Stan's Flow and Kris Holm at that price level.
yeah but its 36, thats a perfect width. CH is a little fat and heavy non disc spec.
flow it too narrow and some say soft.

What I've been told

Stouts: Anyday now. I was told January would be the time the supplies hit the U.S. shores. Most likely in February sometime, given distribution and what not.

Gordo: Supposedly will be available late February/early March according to my info.

chequamegon: If they can squeeze a $100.00 a pop for those drilled out, single wall snow rims that were on here a day or so ago then an all year round, heavy duty rim with some killer technology oughta be worth $25.00 more, dontcha think? I sure do. I think that the burn Salsa felt with the Delgado Disc was motivation to create a no holds barred, best in class rim. I fully expect to be blown away by its performance. I don't think we'll be let down either. ;)

Oh I agree, for that purpose. It will be a great rim for sure.

But for a general rider, it will be a tough sell when compared to a Flow at $95. Unless you have a specific need such as snow riding, I dont see many people jumping for it.

However, I will be one of the first to jump in, I want to lace them up to an older pair of Hugi disc hubs I have to make a DHer style wheelset. With some 2.3 Resolutions, the fabled footprint should be amazing to ride on the sweet Fruita singletrack.

But that is precisely my point. A great product for people that want it for a specific purpose, but not really a prime choice for a person that has one set of wheels.

lets see if i cant get on both sides of this fence

i like all the things goin on with the Gordo (bead lock, 35mm, 603g) but 120 is to high. i would also argue that the big G is a viable do it all hoop for the same reasons given above. there is such a small weight penalty for the larger rim that its worth the 100 or so g's a wheel.

I picked up a set of Kris Holm rims and there is no way i will relace my wheel for a 120$ Gordo. a KH rim is something like 45$ bcD drilled out a KH rim and got it down to about 800g (stock is 844) FYI.

so if im somebody like chequamagon who is building a purpose built wheelset the KH hoops are hard to beat:thumbsup:

dont forget about the KH light thats in the works (650g/35mm).

.

Personally, I don't have a problem with the $120 price tag. I think it is towards the top end, but I'll reserve judgement until they have been released and true reviews are out. If it is all that it looks like on paper, it should be all that and a bag of chips. The preliminary reviews have been positive.

120 doesn't scare me off.

now having an appropriate tire for a rim like that is another story...

we need a real 2.5" nevegal dual ply, or those tires that Mike C. had at Ibike... :madman:

Ladies & Gents,

Joe Meiser here, one of the designers for Salsa Cycles and designer of the Gordo and new Semi Disc rims. I'm not going to give you information on availability, but I will tell you why the release has been delayed. As some of you know we have recieved some critical feedback regarding the quality and design of our rims. Recieving this feedback has changed completely the way we design rims, so, Thank you for the feedback. With this information we have worked to refine the rim to eliminate build quality issues, tire fit issues, and several others. I think you will like the results when they are delivered. We don't want to rush delivery of the rims and have them not meet your expectations. They are coming, I hope that we can hold your attention longer.

Thanks Y'all.

Thanks for the info, Joe--great to hear.

Ladies and Germs, I can offer a bit of info here. I was lucky enough to get a pre-production version of the Gordo rims not too long after Interbike. I got to lace/tension/true them myself, then I rode them a handful of times on my LunchBox when the dirt was still visible in the fall. It is a great rim. Super secure bead seat, tight tire fit, and wiiiiiide as the day is long. It fills a gaping gap in the market that was just screaming out to be plugged.

Whatever the price ends up being, IMO it'll be worth it, as there is simply no other rim like it. You can get heavier, wider, lighter, and narrower, but you can't anything that fits the total AM/HD bill like this rim does.

I'm 99% certain that the Salsa fellas have tweaked and improved the design significantly since I received this set, and I'm really looking forward to riding and building them--whenever that day comes.

Cheers,

MC

this fills a void for DH 29ers. whats the word on running them tubless now after re-design?

can't wait to get them on my dh 29er this year. need a pro DHer to give them a full load test?

when is bti getting stouts?
My LBS has them in stock, and they are a MTBR advertiser, and one of the well known online retailers.

disclaimer: I do not work there, I just give them all my money..... :eek:ut:

WTB Stout? Should be available now. I have a set (that came off some bike)

Great tire. Guitar Ted has a write-up on the Stout on his site, will tell you everything you need to know.

My three word review: this tire rails. :)

It is the perfect tire for bashing into stuff, rolling over stuff, and dropping off of stuff. All at once.
