Why is it a good idea to grease steel bodies?

I've never greased a cassette body, steel, Ti, or Al, in 15+ years of riding and have never had a problem with one. Neither of the mechanics I worked with at a shop for a while had ever done so either.

I know, I never even heard of that one

what, he's talking about smearing grease all over the outside of the freehub body? why? why would someone want to do that? sounds like a waste of perfectly good grease to me.

you wann slather grease all over something, do it to your steel steerer tube, inside and out.

and just in case he's talking about somehow pumping the freehub full of grease with one of those morningstar grease thingees: don't do that either. it'll slow the pawls from returning so they'll end up rounding out the little dealies they catch on, wrecking the hub. and in winter, they won't return a'tall...

Wow, I feel original.

Time to defend!!!

I thought it would be a good idea to lightly grease the outside of the freehub because there is metal to metal contact with the cassette's carrier. It makes more sense to me than grease a steel steerer tube(which I do also). I've heard of some crazy people putting grease on bottom bracket threads...

I use the Morningstar on all my "Shitmano" hubs with Spin Doctor grease and never have any of the problems you speak of. Granted, I live in a high temp climate, therefore, don't have to worry about too thick of grease. But even at 30 degrees it is just fine. If I did, I also have the Morningstar low temp oil to pump in. The Spin Doctor grease is just the right consistency for my uses. And no, I don't use it just because it is a Shimano product. I also use it on all the headset bearings for my 4 rigid hardtails in case you were wondering.

I grease my freehub bodies...

...especially on my CK hubs because the damn Al mars so easily that I'll take any help I can get in popping the cassette off. I'm on the perpetual wait list from CK for the steel freehub body.

I basically grease anything, copiously, that involves metal/metal contact and torque per spec. Keeps my bike squeak free and I've never rounded off bolts that have seized, etc. The only thing I've damage is rotor bolts which in hindsight I errantly applied Locktite to. Hope told me this is a no no.
