How do i know if my spokes are tight enough?

How do i know if my spokes are tight enough and am i right by turning them counter clockwise to tighten them? Thanks.

Get things pretty darn tight

Looking down, you'll be turning the wrench counterclockwise.

Hard to describe the tension precisely without a tensiometer, but it should be very tight on the tighter side. I shoot for 120-150 kilograms of force per spoke on the short side. What's probably more important is getting 90 kg. or more on the looser side (long side) as spokes that are too loose are the ones that break. If you go 90 on a rear nondrive wheel, the drive side will be above 120. Uniformity is almost as important as tension, so make sure all the spokes on the same side make the same sound when you pluck them with a fingernail. You can compare the pitch with another well built wheel to get an idea of how they should sound.

Josh Brandt, the author of "The Bicycle Wheel" says to get the spokes tight enough to get the wheel to "fail" or taco a little, then back off and go just less than that failure level when you retension. I'm not sure that you have to do that every time, but doing so will result in a well tensioned wheel.

Mavic Flexing...

I have a set of Mavic 717's with Hugi 240S and double butted spokes. The wheels are less than a year old, but do to a couple of loose spokes, I decided to have the wheels tensioned and trued. Before I did, I noticed some flex in the back wheel. I thought getting the wheels tensioned and trued (by a very reputable shop) ould take care of the flex, but no change. Is having some flex in these wheels (I can actually flex them enough by hand on my SC Blur to get the tire to touch the rear triangle) to be expected?

Check your hub shell for cracks. There have been a few reports of this happening with the Hugi hubs.
