mix n match shimano LX ST-M585 with XT caliper (M765) OK?

I have been given LX dual control levers(ST-M585) without calipers. I saw a special on XT calipers (M765), so I am wondering if I can use them. I know you aren't meant to mix n match different levers and calipers, but the LX and XT combination looks like it will work ok.

Help!!

The Shimano Hydraulic systems are all compatible with each other. All you need to do is change the fittings and essentially make an LX end and an XT end for your hose. I've seen Deore/Saint LX/XT Deore/XTR, etc... I personally run XT/XT but thats just because they were available locally.

yep.. no problem... I run exactly that setup on my SS, as Intense5point5 said, you just need the right hoses/fittings

you need a 0 degree fitting at the lever and a 90 degree fitting at the 760 caliper, or just get the SM-BH63 hoses, that come with those fittings

no... the BH63 has a 90 degree connector at the caliper end, and the 580 LX use a 0 degree connection at the caliper, and the 760 XT use a 90 degree one (the new 08 770 XTs and 970 XTR use a 0 degree connector)

Since the OP has the LX levers already, wouldn't he be better off with the LX calipers? Of course, I have no idea if said levers came with hoses or not. If not, then its all up to what he wants to spend. Personally, I've played with the DC levers and prefer my switchgear separated from my brake levers. I got the M585 calipers and levers from Jenson a couple weeks ago. Now I just need to get wheels with disc hubs!

Crisillo - Thanks for the info.

So from what I gather via the Shimano compatabilty chart and your post, I need SM-BH59 for the LX 585 calipers from Jensen.

Any chance you know what fitting kit I need to set up the BH59 hoses to 96X shifters?

Crisillo - If that is a recent photo, fix your gad dang rear QR.

On another subject, for the thread starter, we won't go about and look for these things for you. (AKA Part numbers, prices, etc..) but If you find what you THINK you need, I'm sure one of the nice people on these forums would proof it for you before the purchase order.

no prob... yeah... if you go with the LX calipers the BH59 will be fine

for the 965 shifters (older XTR), you need a 90 deg. ftting at both ends (so you can only use 760 or 960 calipers with it, the hose is SM-BH96), see here http://www.paul-lange.de/produkte/s...e/produkte/shimano/support/explosionszeichungen_archiv/BR/BR-M965-R_ST-M965.pdf

Levers were $59.99 with hoses, calipers/rotors were $25 and $21.50. These are 160mm centerlock rotors, btw. I also got some other stuff at the same time, so shipping was more. I think for just the brakes it came out to around $112-115 shipped.

brewdog - thats what we've been explaining. If you have both a lever and caliper with different fittings, no problem. If no fittings are available for a specific type of hose, thats the problem. If the hose diameter is universal and the fittings are for different size/ type hoses, then your basically screwed unless you own a machine shop or know how to jerry-rig a working fitting assembly.

As for absolute universal compatibility, the only lever/ caliper combo that may have compatibility issues with interchange are the Grimeca/Shimano XT BR-M755 4-Piston calipers. These were not produced by Shimano but rather, purchased in bulk from Grimeca and modified for use with mineral oil. I haven't had a chance to test this myself, but I believe that the BR-M755 System is on a different branch of the Shimano family tree.

(BR-M755's are awesome BTW.)


Edit: Now that I think about it, just ONE hose won't work. You need extra fittings, or the other hose with the fittings in order to have a compatible lever/caliper set.
