Unless your cassette is totally worn out, I don't think that's what's giving you your troubles. Take Will's advice and check the limits on your R/D.

Gram-counting aside, in a double-blind test with the same derailleur, I really don't think I would feel a difference in shifting between my PG990, 950, an XT, or an XTR cassette.

all cassettes with a spider on the large rings are good. I agree that there is no way to feel a difference with any.
If your chain is skipping it is either your RD, chain, hanger or cable. If you are using shitmano stuff check the cable tension first. Well you should do that with sram too. 95% of the time it is 1 or 2 turns of the barrell adjuster.
Then check alignment of the RD and hanger. If you still have issues check your chain and if there still is a problem after that replace your cable and housing. If you still have a problem after all of those steps you need to hang yourself because you suck at life.

I use an XTR on my DH bike and a red Sram (can't remember model #) on my AM bike and have never had a problem either. If you get a new cassette get a good chain also, I recommend a Sram PC-991 (powerlinks rule).

My bad I have an XT cassette and XTR chain on my DH

Not a big fan of the new SRAM chains. The older PC-99s were better (IMO).

I'm running a Wipperman Connex stainless chain. They're pricey. They're also one of the best chains I've had.

Be sure to also check your chain for a stiff link. A loose hub or sloppy pivots can also give you shifting problems. Who knows, it might even be that you just need to clean your drivetrain.

A cassette is a cassette. The more you spend, the lighter it is. Get the 40 dollar 9 speed from your LBS, use it till it breaks and get another one.
Some cassettes shift better than others. For instance, Performance brand cassettes tend to make a ton of noise, and they don't shift very well.

there you go

XT has the best strength to dollar ratio for a good DH cassette and WON'T gouge the freehub like XSL_Will already said. Srams are notorious for that. IAC I'd have to agree that it's probably not your problem. When I get complaints of shifting problems that can't be traced I always look FIRST at the chainguide setup - 90% of the time that will be the problem (bad rollers, improper shimming/alignment, chainline issues, etc.). The other 10% is usually der alignment issues.

Have FUN!
