I was recommended the WTB Laserdisc Trails over the DT 7.1s as they're a wider rim. I guess it depends if you're edging towards XC or AM.
Thanks,
I'm new to the 29'er thing and mainly trying to build it lighter for long rides, I have a 6" bike for other stuff. When you read every 29'er rim manufacturer's description they are all the "strongest" and "light". I had originally chosen the 7.1's due to a MHC recommendation. But my wheels are not built yet and may have an option to change rims if I have a good idea what I want, 7.1's were the default I guess. Not sure if I want to run tubeless with non-tubeless tires, but if the Stans rims work well tubeless with non tubless tires I may give it a try. I only run UST tubeless (UST tires on UST rims with Stans sealent) on my other bike and it works great for me.

The choices I'm down to:
DT 7.1
Stans Arch
Stans Flow
WTB Laserdisc Trail

Any opinions?

Thanks,
B

Avoid Stan's Arch. It's a little too XC.
I'm doing Stan's Flow which are pretty stout and will accept UST or sealed conventional tires.

That's what Larry recommends for me and research confirmed.

29er Flow=525 gm
29er Arch=470 gm

I'm happy to sacrifice the 55gm for more durability. I hate bent rims.

I don't know much about the DT 7.1 (that was Larry's 2nd choice for me) or the WTB.

If you can swing it, I highly recommend I-9 hubs & spokes which make for a stiff build. You'll want the wheels as stiff as possible because the big wheels are inherently flexier than 26ers.

Also, in my experience it takes a lot more to flat a 29er tube. I've maybe flatted 4 times in the 15 months I've had a 29er SS and I ride regularly through chunky square edged rock terrain. I'm not sure if I'm actually going to run the Flows tubeless although it's a nice option to have. And I'm very impressed with the 29er Rampage tires thus far. I'm hitting the corners faster & harder than my pal who is running the 29er Nevegals and he's complaining that the Nevs give out too easily under hard cornering.

I can't swing the I9's. If I like the 29'er thing maybe I'll upgrade next summer. I'm probably going straight guage spokes on my old King rear and Hadley 20mm front. Just havn't decided on my rims yet. I sent my hubs to Larry and they should get there today. Don't know when he'll start building but I figure I have through the weekend to decide on rims.

Thanks for the info,
B

Rampage vs Nevegal?

Rainman over on the 29er board has done extensive testing. The summary is that the Nevegal has a little more grip, but the Rampage is slightly lighter, rolls faster and has a more supple casing.

Here are some of his recent thoughts.

Stans vs 7.1?

As RD said, search for MikeSee, who has written extensively. I seem to recall that he now recommends the Flow over the 7.1, stating that the Flow is as stiff or stiffer, but is wider, and comes in below its stated weight. He also recommends the Bontrager Mustang OSB - which I'm very happy with. OSB rims have less dish and are therefore stronger.

Right now the front is an I-9 laced to a Salsa Delgado, borrowed from my SS. The rear is a Stan's Arch laced to a Hope hub. Flex is likely coming from wheels as well as fork.
After seeing your rim spec, I have no doubt that most of the flex is coming from the front rim. Even laced to an I9 hub/spokes, that sucker is waaaay anemic for the front of this bike. I'd be surprised if any of the flex you're feeling is coming outta the fork. It ain't no FR fork by any stretch, but IMO it's stiffness surpasses any other 32mm fork going--from any manufacturer. I'll be curious to hear your extended fork review once you've got bona-fide wheels on there.

And, BTW, I enjoyed watching your LunchBoxx vids. Very cool. I'll be in GJ in August for a biz trip but don't know if I'm driving with the bike or flying. Any chance you'd give me the tour if I can pull it off?
Yep. Hit me with an E a few days before you come. If you fly and can't bring a bike I can usually arrange a demo.

Final wheelset: I-9's laced to Stan's Flow. Should be stouter.
Agreed.

Very little dive and a controlled stroke. I'm hearing a knock but am guessing that it's coming from a spring without shrink-wrap as I don't feel any bushing slop.
I think you're right. Didn't realize they weren't shrink wrapping the springs.
