I'd shy away from ISIS for now, there's been some durability issues with the bearings. Do a search for more info, it's been well covered in this forum.
Check out the new outboard bearing types of cranks or octalink (shimano), if you feel the need for some newer technology.
I'm still happily using sq taper and will stick w/ 'em for the foreseeable future.
I think it's hard to beat bang for the buck with shimano deore or lx (which is octalink).
good luck,

When you make the spindle fatter, yet the cups are the same diameter to fit in existing BB shells, the size of the bearings must become smaller. Smaller bearings wear out quicker. Same problem plaqued the old Magic Motorcycle/Coda cranks which used a fat splined spindle long before shitmano and others. The bearings needed attention frequently.
Pluses of spline spindles: theoretically more rigid. How often are you out riding and lamenting the lack of rigidity in your square taper spindle? Yeah.
Another plus: Spline is more common.
Minuses:
Other than the bearing issue, which should be enough to steer any right-thinking person away from them, is the alloy issue. Too bad a lot of the cranks that use them are now made out of softer 6000 alloy rather than the really good 7075 everybody used for aftermarket square taper cranks of old. So the soft splines in the cranks start wallowing out and the cranks become loose and sloppy. You read it here almost daily. Waaaa, my Truvativ/Bonty/pick a name splined cranks are loose, waaaa.
I got 17 bikes, oh wait, make that 16, forgot my alpinestars broke. all with square taper. they all seem to work ok. some even with ti spindles. and I'm big and got freakishly big strong legs. only spindle I ever broke was a campy super record track c.p. ti spindle, which caused an ugly crash on the velodrome.
