I've been reveling in single speed bliss, except for the king hub I'm using that sounds like a freakin' buzz saw chasing me. Does anyone make a hub that's totally silent? Do I need to switch to a freewheel set up? Thanks.

I've found Shimano hubs to be the quietest - tho I only use the road variety on road bikes so I dunno bout the MTB versions. I'm running a Surly SS hub on my MTB and Shimano freewheels are also the quietest of the three I've heard (ACS, White Ind., Shimano).

True presision "Stealth hubs" are said to be totaly silent. Availability is a little sketchy and they cost as much as Kings. I have 2 recomendations, MP3 player and/or Fixed Cog.

What sucks is that you either get Shimano silence and the impending self destruction of all internal parts at the worst possible time (read furthest from the trail head) or you can get something that costs three times as much or more, is three times as loud at least and will for the large majority of riders be bulletproof.
Someone was making a silent buff mountain/bmx SS hub, forget the name, do a search and you will find a thread where someone mentions them. They have been "out of stock" or something like that for several years though.

Disclaimer: for those who have used Shimano stuff with nary a problem, I meant no insult. This is my 2cents and probably ain't worth that.

I've found Shimanos to be the quietest (and without any mechanical problems). Of the boutique hubs, DT240's are quiet if you grease the ratchet. If the ratchet is dry-ish, then it's like Kosovo, rat-tat-tat!

Shimano

Shimano makes FH-R080, FH-R050, FH-T400, FH-T300 & probably some other models of "silent clutch" hubs. Instant engagement, completely silent and smooth rolling. No disc mount and just about the heaviest thing out there.

Don't know if it's true, but the story I heard is they were developed for police bikes.

the only "silent" hubs i have heard are (as others said) the shitmano, or cheap copies like formula, stout etc.

how bout the surly hubs? never heard one of those....

Bontrager or DT

I rode wheels that came on a Fisher Rig which had Bontrager hubs, and they were nearly silent. I think they are made by someone else, but they said Bontrager on em. Also, DT 240 hubs use that star ratchet system which is pretty darn quiet. I hud those hubs on my Merlin and when they got a little noisy I could clean and regrease them with regular tools in about five minutes. If you use M-Prep or some kind of very light grease instead of oil they get even quieter.

The silent clutch uses a cam instead of a ratchet, and was supposed to be more durable.
I built a shimano silent-clutch / x517 (26") wheel that I've put through a lot of singlespeed use and it has been fine. The silence is excellent. The weight is a bit more than your average hub. I've heard about durability probs, but have had none of my own. Oh yeah, the hub has instant engagement, also.

My I9 hub is really quiet. It's fairly quiet when you spin it in your hand. On the trail, I don't hear it.

great hubs. i have one. all you hear is the tires on the ground. the fastest engagement of any hub out there as well. instantaneous.

A company called Machine Tech made a silent running hub with instant engagement years ago...I had one. Didn't take long for it to develope a lot of slip in the mechanism which was a huge problem of the design.

When I worked at LEW Composites we were working on a silent hub with no luck...and we had an ex-King machinest as well as some other real top notch designers on board. I'd be leary of any silent hubs on the market. I say save your money, buy an Ipod, and ride with headphones in your ears instead. :)
